So far little is known about the specific advancements of id Tech 6 over its predecessor, other than that the use of {{wp|megatexture}} technology has been reduced in emphasis, with a return to more dynamic lighting as was used in [[id Tech 4]]. Though [[John Carmack]] had planned to use the name "id Tech 6" for a conceptual voxel engine, this concept is not known to have ever advanced into an implementation phase. The id Tech 6 game engine, also referred to informally as id Tech 666 by id Software developers, is a technological successor of the id Tech 5 engine which powered id Software's Rage and several ZeniMax Media internal developers' games. It will power the upcoming 2016 reboot of the classic Doom series previously called Doom 4, now also simply called Doom.

Technology

So far little is known about the specific advancements of id Tech 6 over its predecessor, other than that the use of megatexture technology has been reduced in emphasis, with a return to more dynamic lighting as was used in id Tech 4. Though John Carmack had planned to use the name "id Tech 6" for a conceptual voxel engine, this concept is not known to have ever advanced into an implementation phase. Carmack left id Software in late 2013, leaving Robert Duffy as Chief Technical Officer, with Tiago Sousa being hired on shortly afterward to take over his role in graphics research and development. The choice to increment the version of the engine was thus made without Carmack's input, and may not necessarily be consistent with the prior evolutionary path of id Tech engines.
