# of WADs vs. # of levels / claimed vs. actual numbers

I'm not sure that the current field is clear enough on what it's actually reporting. In my experience these compilations are more likely to be marketed with a number of "levels" rather than a number of "WADs" which can be a relevant distinction when a single .WAD sometimes contains multiple levels. This also makes it more difficult to test the veracity of the publisher's claims.

An actual number of levels vs. claimed number of levels might be interesting, but given the tediousness of checking this, perhaps it's better to consider that this field be dropped as too lacking in real information? -- ETTiNGRiNDER (talk) 21:10, 30 May 2014 (UTC)

I know it's a bit of a problem determining "levels" vs. "WADs" but it's still useful information to judge the relative size of the compilations by. However I would request that you not include/add things like "1000's" - if you are unable to get an actual numeric figure and cannot download and mount the image to manually count, then don't include the information at all.
I also removed the word (registered) from the Launcher field because it is not part of the launcher program's title and was causing that column to increase in length and the table width is already maxing out. --Quasar (talk) 21:33, 30 May 2014 (UTC)

Shovelware list

Doomworld forum user buttspit posted a list probably not exhaustive but still more complete than what we have in the article currently. There are much less details about them though, having only the title and for some an approximate level count. I'm pasting the list below for posterity. --Gez (talk) 10:56, 30 November 2014 (UTC)

A few of these I'm aware of, such as the alternate versions of Demon Gate that claim 600, vs 666, levels, but I've not had time to research them yet. If you branch out into German, some of them are documented here, but to be honest I feel like some of these obvious hack jobs somebody had printed up at the German version of Kinko's, don't even list a publisher at all, and are probably owned by 10 people in the whole world have to be below our notability standards. Thanks for the list though, it'll give me (or anybody else) something to work off of. --Quasar (talk) 16:16, 30 November 2014 (UTC)

Level Master II

A few notes on my recent edit and the product.

  • The contents appear to just be a copy of 3D Game Alchemy. I didn't get a sealed copy, but the book is pictured on the back of the box and the book fits the box just right. My copy didn't come with anything beyond the box and book with disc.
  • The book is from SAMS, but the box says Macmillan Digital Publishing USA, so I changed it to this.
  • I do not see the phrase "Instant Doom Levels" written anywhere on the box or book cover.
  • I have seen Level Master III, IV and V offered for sale on eBay/Amazon, but never just plain Level Master (I). This kind of bugs me since the Level Master II box does say "Volume 2" on the side. (I don't have 3-5, which are not Doom-related anyway.) What's with this? Was there really a Level Master I out there somewhere? Is it related to the previous edition of 3D Game Alchemy (Tricks of the Doom Programming Gurus)?

Most of my info came from here. This page says it comes with an eBook copy of Tricks of the Doom Gurus, which is not the same book as 3D Game Alchemy - see List of books. Are we sure this is the one-and-the-same product? --Quasar (talk) 18:51, 23 January 2015 (UTC)
Some photos. I really don't think archive.org puts much care into those collections. -- ETTiNGRiNDER (talk) 19:39, 23 January 2015 (UTC)
