Cdoom/PSX screen shots[edit]

Hi Symbioosi, welcome to the Doom Wiki.  I'm glad to see you're working on the source port articles; there are still a lot of red links there.  However, I'm confused about these screen shots being labeled as public domain.  As I understand it (though I'm no expert), if you simply reproduce a 2D image without adding any of your own "creative input", then the original author retains the copyright.  Am I missing something?    Ryan W 18:48, 21 August 2008 (UTC)

Hi Ryan! Thank you for the invitation. I don't actually know that because I know awfully little about legal stuff when it comes to copyrighting issues and licenses. So the images would belong to id Software really?Waiting for you confirmation.Symbioosi 20:04, 21 August 2008 (UTC)
I don't think anyone here really knows a lot about it.  The current practice (which I realize is dealt with only tersely in the image policy and Doom Wiki:Copyrights) is to mark all screen shots as fair use; this was decided in consultation with people who had contributed to licensing policies on other sites, such as User:Fredrik and User:Splarka.  Ownership does not transfer to you just because you reproduced the image.  Otherwise, by the same logic, you could photocopy a Calvin & Hobbes book and then say that you were legally entitled to give it away for free... I'm not sure the distributors would appreciate that.   :>     Ryan W 10:22, 22 August 2008 (UTC)
Well, good thing you cleared that up. I actually didn't think of it in that particular way. I'm going to change all the images' copyright labels to that fair use one. But how do I do that? The copyright label, when I try to edit them, it reads only PD-Self inside two curly brackets Symbioosi 11:33, 22 August 2008 (UTC)
Ah, okay, I was talking too fast.  The curly brackets are a template, which was added automatically when you uploaded, based on the pull-down menu.  Category:Copyright and image templates lists some other possible options if you want to change it by hand later.  Currently, each of our images gets sorted into two categories, one for copyright and one for subject matter (this, like any policy, can be changed, but it is a massive project due to the number of files involved, so if you disagree, please discuss first).  In the future, when uploading screen shots of a non-PC port, you should probably just choose "Doom/Doom II screenshot" from the pull-down menu.  That corresponds to  {{screenshot-doom}}  , which will put the image in the fair use category and the "Doom series screenshots" category.    Ryan W 12:02, 22 August 2008 (UTC)
I hope I labeled them right this time :) Symbioosi 14:44, 22 August 2008 (UTC)
You mean these? [1] [2]  That's exactly what I was saying, yes.   :>     Ryan W 16:05, 22 August 2008 (UTC)
