The ammo in Doom 3 is unique to each weapon unlike in the previous games, where some weapons shared the same type of ammo. In Doom 3 there are two types of ammo pickups for most ammo types that can be found in the maps, a small one and a large one, but a few weapons have only one type of ammo pickup.

In Doom 3 the maximum amount of ammunition the player can carry also includes all the rounds in the magazine. However, in Doom 3: BFG Edition the maximum amount of ammo applies only to the ammo in reserve, excluding the ammo in the magazine, which in terms of gameplay means that the player can carry one more magazine worth of ammo for each weapon.

Also in the BFG Edition the amount of ammo the pickups give is increased significantly (usually a double of the original game's amounts) and, on top of that, the amount of pickups themselves is increased in the maps.

Bullets

The bullets is an ammo type used by the pistol. The small ammo pickup resembles a pistol clip and gives the player 12 rounds (24 in BFG Edition). The large ammo pickup resembles a large steel ammo box and gives the player 36 rounds (48 in BFG Edition). If the player pickups the pistol itself, it will give the player 12 rounds.

The maximum amount of pistol bullets the player can carry is 360.

Shells

The shells is an ammo type used by the shotgun (and double barrel shotgun in the Resurrection of Evil expansion). The small ammo pickup resembles a small shell box and gives the player 8 rounds (12 in BFG Edition, despite the small pickup showing 8 shells). The large ammo pickup is a substantially larger box, which gives the player 16 rounds (24 in BFG Edition). The shotgun itself gives the player 4 rounds when picked up.

The maximum amount of shotgun shells the player can carry is 320.

Clip

The clip is the name of the ammo type used by the machine gun. The small ammo pickup is a single machine gun clip and it gives the player 30 rounds (60 in BFG Edition). The large ammo pickup is two machine gun clips bound together which, quite unintuitively, gives 45 rounds to the player (90 in BFG Edition). If the player picks up the weapon itself, it will only give the player 10 rounds.

The maximum amount of machine gun ammo the player can carry is 600.

Ammo belt

The ammo belt is a type of ammo used by the chaingun. This ammo type has only one type of pickup: a large box with an ammo belt hanging out of it which gives the player 60 rounds (90 in BFG Edition). In multiplayer mode this pickup gives 120 rounds. If the player picks up the weapon itself, it will give 30 rounds to the player.

The maximum amount of chaingun ammo the player can carry is 600.

Hand grenades

The hand grenades is an ammo type that is also a weapon itself. There is only one type of grenade pickup, a pack of four grenades which actually gives the player 5 grenades (8 in BFG Edition). It is worth noting that in Doom 3 there are two different entities for grenade pickups: one is defined as a weapon (weapon_handgrenade) and the other one as an ammo (ammo_grenade_small). Both of them can be found in the maps, and the only difference between them is the pickup sound: the weapon entity plays a distinct grenade readying sound upon being picked up, while the ammo entity play one of the generic ammo pickup sounds instead.

The maximum amount of grenades the player can carry is 50.

Cells

The cells are ammo used by the plasma gun. It comes in two varieties of pickups: a single cell charge which gives the player 25 plasma rounds (50 in BFG Edition), and a box of two cell charges which gives the player 50 rounds (75 in BFG Edition). The plasma gun itself gives the player 50 rounds upon picking it up.

The maximum amount of cells the player can carry is 500.

Rockets

The rockets are used by the rocket launcher. There are two pickup types: a one-row pack of four rockets which actually gives the player 5 rockets (same in BFG Edition), and a two-row pack of eight rockets which gives the player 10 rockets (20 in BFG Edition). Picking up the weapon itself will give 5 rockets to the player.

The maximum amount of rockets the player can carry is 96, which is unusual due to the rocket launcher's five-round capacity. This is probably because at some point in development the rocket launcher had a different magazine capacity (presumably four rounds).[citation needed]

BFG cell

The BFG cell is an ammo type used by the BFG 9000. It comes in one variety: a large green glowing cell which gives the player 4 rounds (6 in BFG Edition). Picking up the BFG itself will give the player 4 rounds.

The maximum amount of BFG cells the player can have is 32.
