Atonement is a 33-level megawad for Doom II made by Matthew DeCalzadilla (Moustachio). Developed and released over the course of five years, the project was first revealed on the Doomworld forums on July 31, 2017, with the initial release comprising three maps,[1] while the full release followed on October 15, 2022.[2] The mapset is divided into six episodes, with the first two episodes receiving a separate upload to the idgames archive on May 2, 2018,[3] before the full release was added on November 28, 2022.

The mapset encompasses a wide variety of mapping styles, from minimaps to lengthy exploration-driven levels, and casual combat to light slaughter. The WAD makes use of the cc4-tex texture pack and features a custom soundtrack almost entirely made up of tracks by Dial-up for Murder, including six bespoke tracks commissioned for the set.

Atonement received an honorable mention at the 2022 Cacowards.

Story[edit]

You are the premier marine scientist working on the UAC's baddest tech yet: inter-planetary transport.
You're up on Mars, making sure the new machines don't turn people into giblets.

A few lost volunteers later and you've finally perfected your invention.
On the way to power on the machine you start to feel an uneasy presence nearby...

Content[edit]

Custom content[edit]

Atonement makes use of a DeHackEd patch to, among other things, add a custom boss and one additional monster to the game. The color palette is also modified in subtle ways, resulting in slightly darker shades for a lot of the colors, while the colormap lump is edited to make the upper half of the desaturated red range (colors 16–31) decay less quickly into browns and grays with decreasing brightness levels.

Hell paladin
A cybernetic Hell noble with a lion's mane, 850 hit points, and a shield. It attacks the player by firing two shotgun blasts of the same type as used by the shotgunner (three pellets, each doing 3–15 damage) from its right arm in quick succession, and follows it up with a single rocket fired after a short delay. Though it does raise its shield momentarily before it fires its rocket, this does not protect it from damage in any way. It replaces the Wolfenstein SS.
Arbiter
A red-robed, humanoid undead that serves as the final boss of the WAD, possessing 5000 hit points and attacking the player with two shotguns that it holds in both of its hands. It moves quickly and uses a chaingun-like attack, consisting of rapidly fired zombieman's rifle shots, switching to shotgunner blasts at melee range, and a burst of arachnotron plasma when its pain state is activated. Once it is killed, it will trigger Romero's head to wake up, while its corpse will start spawning monsters into the middle of the arena. It replaces the monster spawner.
