"Bruiser" is also a name used for the baron of Hell.

The bruiser is a monster found in Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil and The Lost Mission. Aptly named, the bruiser has a large muscular body in the vein of a Hell knight and mechanical features similar to those of the mancubus, with various differences in their artificial parts. The bruiser is taller than a mancubus, but somewhat shorter than a Hell knight. It stands roughly 9 feet tall.

Its feet feature robotic hooves, both arms are giant fire ball launchers, and the head is a sight to behold. It has two demon horns on the far back of its head, facing outward, while the face has two yellow eyes with no pupils. Above the eyes are two yellow rings. Instead of a mouth, the creature has a television screen connected to the lower portion of its face via a fleshy tube. The screen displays different pictures depending on the monster's state: an eyeball is briefly displayed when an enemy is sighted, and a close up of a presumably angry human mouth, showing only gums and teeth, is displayed while the creature is active. The mouth sometimes opens and closes as the beast moves. Its back has what appears to be a visible robotic spine.

Combat characteristics

The bruiser attacks by rapidly firing alternating fireballs from its twin arm cannons which will quickly kill almost any opponent. Damage from a single shot to a fully armored player can be as much as 81 points on the Veteran skill level, and the accompanying damage effects will make effective retaliation nearly impossible. Its attack is relentless, and it will continue nearly constant fire as long as its target remains in sight.

Its endurance is slightly less than that of the Hell knight. The best ways to kill it are to either shoot the TV screen with the strongest weapons available, or to use the berserk power from the Artifact and attack with the fists. Two double-barreled shotgun blasts or one single punch in berserk mode will kill it. Good cover is strongly advised if the creature is to be engaged without benefit of the Artifact or, in the Lost Mission's Nightmare difficulty, the Soul Cube.

Development

Seen early in Doom 3's initial development, the bruiser's unique TV-like mouth was intended to be another way of surprising the player. The player would walk up to what appeared to be a typical computer terminal, and the terminal would suddenly change, revealing the bruiser in its entirety. This idea was dropped, however, and never happens at any point in the expansions.
