Doom 2 In Name Only is a vanilla compatible 32-level megawad created by members of the Doomworld forums. The project aimed to create new levels based on the titles of those in the original Doom II. It was uploaded to the idgames archive on 14 June, 2014, where it received mixed responses. Many praised the concept, but also criticised the large size of many of the levels. The release of the WAD also gained attention outside of the Doom community, with articles by PC Gamer, RockPaperShotgun, and Kotaku. The WAD received the Mordeth Award at the 21st Annual Cacowards.

Shortly after the release of the project, a prequel, "Ultimate Doom in Name Only" was started. The WAD is still under development and is currently led by Matt Powell (cannonball).

Development historyEdit

The project had its origins in a Doomworld forums thread started by Jason Root (Hellbent) on 15 August, 2012, on the subject of remaking BF_THUD. This prompted a similar thread the next day by Liz Ryerson (ella guro), conceptualising a project where mappers would recreate their least favourite IWAD level, based on what they hoped the map would be. On 17 August, the project concept was remade into what became Doom 2 In Name Only. The concept proved popular, attracting numerous mappers within a very short space of time.

Early into development, Ryerson's prolonged absences due to real-life situations jeopardised the project. On 23 November, 2012, after two months of no real leadership, project management was taken over by Tristan Clark (Eris Falling), who would lead the project to its completion. The first alpha version was released on 10 July, 2013, and the first beta was released on 24 February, 2014, and was followed by eight subsequent betas leading up to the final release in June.
