Doom Wiki talk:Departure from Wikia

So we aren't....still aren't allowed to copy images from the old wiki and re-upload them here? --70.170.67.244 21:28, 11 February 2017 (CST)

It's a bad idea to copy images from any site.  Each image is supposed to be chosen for its relevance to a specific article or concept we cover, not photoshopped, and not unduly burdened by licensing.  If someone else captured the image, you probably can't verify any of those.  Using Wikia makes it much worse by hurting our search ranking (duplicate content) and implying that having a relationship with them is OK.
There are many ways to add information to this site, so if you don't enjoy creating files, you don't have to.  Not every article needs 20 images anyway.  If you decide to stick around, I hope you'll keep doing what you've been doing.    Ryan W (usually gone) 13:00, 12 February 2017 (CST)
It's kind of a case-by-case basis kind of thing. Screenshots can't be copyrighted by the person who made them because they're entirely consisting of content from a game, so as far as those go it's "OK," but of course as Ryan points out above we'd prefer to have unique images just so our site stands out. If there is a photograph and it's verifiably CC BY-SA, Free Art Licence, GPL, etc., then it's also fine because such free content can be used anywhere. This requires due research on the uploader's part, as Ryan also points out. If you get it wrong, with honest effort put in, the worst that would happen is that we'd have to delete the image. --Quasar (talk) 09:42, 13 February 2017 (CST)
