Time flies... For next month, possible anniversaries to feature could be Amulets & Armor (25th) and Eternity Engine (21st). The latter would be timely, in view of Heartland and Testing Pool featuring at the Cacowards. Or from an entirely different wiki corner, one of the new movie-related articles on monsters or weapons? --Xymph (talk) 13:20, 26 December 2021 (CST) :I'm going to second Eternity for the reasons Xymph has given, and because it's more Doom-related than Amulets & Armor. Gauss (talk) 13:41, 26 December 2021 (CST) :I cannot vote for EE because I'm biased but I definitely do not see A&A as a valid featured article; it was nearly deleted for its marginal topicality once it was discovered it's not a Doom engine game; it was retained due to the historical interest this mixup caused alone, and because it is an example of what was a greater phenomenon of devs using Doom file formats and tools to make their own lives easier. --Quasar (talk) 14:54, 26 December 2021 (CST) == 2022-02 == Next month, it's 25 years since the release of Mordeth's first episode, and so far the only one hence it got an award named after it. A suitable feature, then? --Xymph (talk) 06:44, 24 January 2022 (CST) :I'd say so for those reasons. Gauss (talk) 10:06, 24 January 2022 (CST) :Sounds good to me. --Dynamo128 (talk) 10:09, 24 January 2022 (CST) == 2022-03 == Since nobody else remembered (cared?) to post a nomination, I guess I'll hunt anniversaries again. It's the 28th for Origwad and E2M1ED, the 27th for SQUARES, and the 26th for Kick Attack! -- but we just featured a mod this month. Also, the 27th for Heretic: The Official Strategy Guide and the 25th for Doom for Sega Saturn. Any preferences? Alternatively, earlier suggestions were Approximate distance or Korax. --Xymph (talk) 03:34, 28 February 2022 (CST) : I vote for the Doom for Sega Saturn article. Not only is 25 a nice number, but it's also a very notorious port that got quite the infamous reputation. - Endless01 (talk) 06:04, 28 February 2022 (CST) :: I also vote for Sega Saturn due to the reasons Endless01 has given. Gauss (talk) 06:47, 28 February 2022 (CST) == 2022-04 == In a rerun from a year ago, anniversaries next month include 3DO's 26th and Hexen (Sega Saturn)'s 25th -- but we just did a port anniversary. There is 2015 Doom source data release's 7th and the 26th for 99 Ways to Die, but neither look that appealing to me at this time. Which brings me back to earlier "general" suggestions like Approximate distance and D'Sparil/Korax. Any other/better nominations? --Xymph (talk) 05:33, 18 March 2022 (CDT) :The 2015 Doom source data release sounds like a good candidate, considering that last year Romero was told to not release any more unseen/alpha/beta resources of Doom, the 2015 source is probably the last one will ever get, so I guess that makes it a bit special. - Endless01 (talk) 06:10, 18 March 2022 (CDT) == 2022-05 == Next month are the 25th anniversaries of the releases of Hexen (Sony PlayStation) and Doom Music (album), but those are five-upped by Wolfenstein 3D's anniversary. So we'll go with that unless there is real opposition? --Xymph (talk) 15:41, 27 April 2022 (CDT) == 2022-06 == Anniversary round-up for June: Quake (26th), Hexen (Nintendo 64) (25th), The Talosian Incident (25th), Dawn of the Dead (25th), and Zandronum (15th). STRAIN also came out in 1997, in June according to the timeline, but the initial strain10.zip is dated Sep 15 with the segment files inside dated July 3, so I'm not sure which month to use. The timeline probably mixed up the 1997 initial release with the June 24, 2015 re-release. Anyway, preferences, anyone? As always, a non-anniversary feature can also be nominated. --Xymph (talk) 05:01, 24 May 2022 (CDT) : Given we just had Wolfenstein 3D as featured, I'd say it's better to have a mod this time, and Talosian Incident would be a good pick in my opinion. --Dynamo128 (talk) 06:11, 24 May 2022 (CDT) == 2022-07 == I thought to get ahead and look for some anniversaries for July. I'd like to nominate the The /newstuff Chronicles article for the next feature. I think it is a noteworthy community event that lasted for 18 years and showcased some of the best and worst of the community in a neatly way. It's a cool part of our history. As for other anniversaries, there's Memento Mori II, All Hell is Breaking Loose and Doom 64 TC. - Endless01 (talk) 07:54, 13 June 2022 (CDT) : Newstuff works for me, and is a good diversion from port & mod anniversaries. --Xymph (talk) 07:42, 13 June 2022 (CDT) :: I also vote for /newstuff. Gauss (talk) 08:20, 13 June 2022 (CDT) : I would like the number of redlinks on that page to be reduced before it is considered eligible for feature status. --Quasar (talk) 00:10, 27 June 2022 (CDT) == 2022-08 == The usual anniversaries round-up: Doom 3 (18th, but we can save it up for its 20th), GZDoom (17th, ditto); and notable mods (among other, less notable ones): The Unholy Trinity (28th) and Army of Darkness TC (26th). Or feature something entirely different? --Xymph (talk) 04:36, 24 July 2022 (CDT) : I vote for The Unholy Trinity. Iconic little piece of WAD history right there! - Endless01 (talk) 11:22, 24 July 2022 (CDT) ::Several valid choices there. I'm going to go for The Unholy Trinity as first choice, with Army of Darkness second and Doom 3 third. Gauss (talk) 11:48, 24 July 2022 (CDT) : Doom 3 is actually in quite bad shape, too much to be a feature without its issues being addressed. In particular there are a lot of dead links; I found one just by clicking the first external hyperlink I saw. Hopefully we can clean those up in time for the 20th. It doesn't seem in danger of winning but I thought I'd mention this despite given the importance of the article. --Quasar (talk) 14:24, 24 July 2022 (CDT) == 2022-09 == I vote for Hell To Pay and Perdition's Gate, the unofficial Doom II expansions by Wraith Corporation. MargaretThatcher (talk) 18:28, 21 August 2022 (CDT) : Little bit early, but I'll vote for Perdition's Gate as well. --Dynamo128 (talk) 18:53, 21 August 2022 (CDT) :: Nah, as mentioned before, nominations could be posted as early as the 1st of the preceding month. --Xymph (talk) 06:01, 22 August 2022 (CDT) : And another vote for Perdition's Gate. Exactly the kind of article to feature as it's somewhat known, but not super known. --Redneckerz (talk) 04:22, 22 August 2022 (CDT) : PG's article doesn't document a release month, but file dates point to July 1996. Naturally I had a look for September anniversaries, and <s>two</s> one stood out: the 25th release anniversary of Hacx<s>, and John Romero's 55th birthday. For the latter we could do a 2-day feature like for Carmack</s>. The Hacx article received a ton of improvements and map/item articles since late last year, so missing its 25th release day would be a pity. Therefore I vote to feature Hacx<s> for most of the month, and the Romero around the 28th</s>. Edit: My bad, that birthday is in October, I was juggling too many dates here. :) Preserving the info so it can be implemented for 2022-10 as yet. /Edit : Perdition's Gate and Hell To Pay (file date April 1996) certainly deserve a feature too, but that could be in October (although Hexen's overdue anniversary could take precedence then) or next year in their respective anniversary months. : I don't mean to be hung up on anniversaries by themselves, but if there is a choice between multiple suitable articles to feature, then a nice round anniversary would be a neat touch in a given month, IMO. --Xymph (talk) 06:01, 22 August 2022 (CDT) :: Agreed, I'm happy to vote Hacx as long as the Wraithcorp WADs get their day in the sun. MargaretThatcher (talk) 16:05, 22 August 2022 (CDT) ::: In light of this, I'll choose Hacx as well. --Dynamo128 (talk) 12:36, 24 August 2022 (CDT) == 2022-10/11? == For October, no obvious anniversaries for releases during the first few weeks caught my attention (may have missed something of course), but it is 28 years since the Doom II release party, which is the kind of article nicely showcasing what the wiki is and does.<br> As mentioned above, October 28 is the 55th birthday of John Romero, and the 30th is when Hexen was released 27 years ago. So... I propose to feature the release party until the 28th, then Romero's birthday wishes, and Hexen from the 30th through November. I know, convoluted plans make the mind dazzle. ;-) --Xymph (talk) 15:50, 24 September 2022 (CDT) : I propose Simplicity, which is IMO an excellent showcase of all the work that underwent into the wiki recently between the mapping table, the content description, the article generation and of course the excellent walkthrough that has been made for it. Of course, it is also a notable mapset, and a bit of a newer one to boot. --Dynamo128 (talk) 13:56, 26 September 2022 (CDT) : Going to second Xymph's idea. --Quasar (talk) 17:50, 26 September 2022 (CDT) == 2022-12 == Next month is the 25th anniversary of the Doom source code release and its first port DOSDoom, major milestones for the community. But neither article has a screenshot for the featured corner. Any suggestions how to solve that if they were featured (possibly together)?<br> Alternatively, Alien Vendetta came out 21 years ago, with its second release being 20 years old. The Classic Episode has its 22nd anniversary, and H2H-Xmas its 27th. And it's 28 years since the Rise of the Triad shareware release. Plenty options for several Decembers to come, then. --Xymph (talk) 05:44, 22 November 2022 (CST) : I will second source code as that's an enormous anniversary for which the approach hasn't gained much note. As discussed on IRC the lack of a shot doesn't concern me in this case, hard to come up with anything appropriate to represent source code. --Quasar (talk) 11:49, 28 November 2022 (CST) == 2023-01 == As before, January is thin on feature-worthy anniversaries that haven't been in the spotlight yet. Perhaps only Jenesis's 12th and Tech Gone Bad's 7th could be used... a few years down the road. So in different territory, how about my suggestion of a year ago to feature Doom: Annihilation monsters, perhaps together with Doom: Annihilation weapons? Or any other proposals, anyone? --Xymph (talk) 06:14, 24 December 2022 (CST) : January is the anniversary of the 1998 release of The Darkening, a very important episode replacement given all the people who worked on it, and the influence it ended up having. I'd say that's a good candidate. --Dynamo128 (talk) 07:04, 24 December 2022 (CST) :: Good point, I overlooked that one. Works for me then. --Xymph (talk) 07:14, 24 December 2022 (CST) == 2023-02 == Two noteworthy anniversaries next month are Doom Legacy's 25th and GT Interactive Software's 30th. Feature one of those, and which; or something else? --Xymph (talk) 07:28, 24 January 2023 (CST) : Doom Legacy gets my vote, though it will need the customary review for things like deadlinks given its age. --Quasar (talk) 01:07, 25 January 2023 (CST) :: First pass done. You may wanna do another. No idea what to write for the remaining redlink though (sorry Wesley, who is a wiki user). --Xymph (talk) 16:31, 25 January 2023 (CST) == 2023-03 == Reusing most of my round-up of a year ago. It's the 29th anniversary for Origwad and E2M1ED, the 28th for SQUARES, and the 27th for Kick Attack! (but Essentials section still empty there). Also, the 28th for Heretic: The Official Strategy Guide. Any preferences? Alternatively, earlier suggestions were Approximate distance or Korax. --Xymph (talk) 03:03, 23 February 2023 (CST) : March is the anniversary for The Darkening Episode 2, a pretty important mod that I think is worth a mention. --Dynamo128 (talk) 10:28, 28 February 2023 (CST) : I think of those, the Heretic strat guide book is in the best shape to feature right now. I think something like a dual Origwad/E2M1ED feature would be better next year when they're a round 30. Kick Attack is a very interesting topic and quite close quality-wise, but it made rounds on Twitter only a couple months ago w/people making a big deal about how it was the "lost Chex Quest". --Quasar (talk) 14:47, 28 February 2023 (CST) :: That would have been my choice too if no one had followed up. We feature mods (and ports) quite often already, so the guide makes for more variation. And DE2 is "only" 23 so it won't hurt saving that up until a major anniversary, like in two years. --Xymph (talk) 15:07, 28 February 2023 (CST) == 2023-04 == Half a year ago Hell To Pay was already nominated but postponed, for its development completed in April 1996 (according to the WAD timestamp). So for its 27th anniversary it can be featured next month. --Xymph (talk) 07:44, 20 March 2023 (CDT) : Sounds good to me --Quasar (talk) 10:16, 20 March 2023 (CDT) Summary: All contributions to DoomWiki.org are considered to be released under the CC BY-SA 4.0 International (see Doom Wiki:Copyrights for details).
