List of featured articles[edit]

These articles have already been selected as featured articles. It is desirable that a new nominee is not one of these.

Previously featured articles[edit]

To clarify my remark under 2020-07: I'm vaguely interested in the distribution, not concerned.  The pool of candidates will always reflect the aggregate of topics people have been motivated to improve over time, like the rest of our content does.  This is necessarily the case given we don't push users into any overall plan for populating content (otherwise we are back to those "why aren't all the commercial releases finished" arguments).  Finally, a nomination is not an improvement drive; aren't we all busy already?  :>  I regret a couple of occasions where I may have implied this and people scrambled to edit more.  If something isn't ready yet, it isn't ready yet, and a few items have even stayed on Entryway multiple months because no one could immediately narrow down a new nomination.

Anyway.

2020-01[edit]

Since I don't have any better ideas, continuing the 25th anniversary theme could be a suitable moment to feature The Lost Episodes of Doom next month. --Xymph (talk) 02:30, 21 December 2019 (CST)

2020-02[edit]

With no obvious 25th anniversaries ;) next month, and no real inspiration on my end either, I just picked a few tools that could possibly be featured: Doom II screen saver, Fuzzy Pumper Palette Shop, DeathManager!, Doom/Master, or The King Doom Experience. Preferences, anyone? Or a very different nomination? --Xymph (talk) 16:10, 27 January 2020 (CST)

(I really should read before i post, apologies.) I would suggest adding some things that coincide with DOOM Eternal's release, like the recent ports of Doom Classic to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Recent mappacks that have come by such as Eviternity. Linguortals and Mikoportals. QZDoom Lastly, perhaps have id Mom Donna Jackson be featured? Just some ideas of inspiration. -- Redneckerz (talk)
Doom II screen saver and Doom/Master are a couple of my fav articles that I've worked on so I'd throw votes at those. Which ever gets the most otherwise gets mine. --Quasar (talk) 14:05, 28 January 2020 (CST)
Doom/Master would be my first choice of all these.  It seems educational to point out items considered important accessories in their period, whereas current Doomers would say, "THAT was somehow useful?"  Early DM lobbies, early editors, and arguably screensavers are thus described.  HTH / KUTGW.  Ryan W (living fossil) 21:15, 30 January 2020 (CST)

2020-03[edit]

For next month, Linguortal (suggested above) could be featured. It also the 10th anniversary of UAC Ultra's release, which has a decent overview page and of which all map articles are reasonably complete too. Or perhaps something different entirely?
Some other suggestions by Redneckerz above are still too stubby and/or don't have the image needed for the featured corner. --Xymph (talk) 16:09, 21 February 2020 (CST)

I am going to suggest that the normal featured article be skipped for this month, as not one but two Doom titles are releasing. I think we could special-feature Doom Eternal for half the month, and Doom 64 for the other half. This would be a special event that doesn't count on the listing of featured articles, as with previous such events. --Quasar (talk) 05:13, 23 February 2020 (CST)
Works for me. Although I propose Doom 64 (already featured before) goes first and Eternal second, either on Mar 15 or exactly on Mar 20. Precedent being Doom (2016) getting featured on its release date. The latter was counted in the listing too, btw, but it was already far more comprehensive due to its history as Doom 4. The Eternal article isn't very complete yet. --Xymph (talk) 03:46, 24 February 2020 (CST)
There is indeed precedent for special events.  In this case some Doomers might feel trolled if we feature something else, so grand is the anticipation.  :D   Cross fingers that more people try submitting wiki content after the newness fades, vs 2016.    Ryan W (living fossil) 10:05, 23 February 2020 (CST)
I'd love to see Linguortal be featured, but i do side with Quasar's suggestion of Doom Eternal/Doom 64 vis-a-vis. For Doom, its easily the biggest event (Both Eternal and 64) this year, so id would stand to reason to put the full focus on these two. I definitely do hope others will chip in on the Wiki content - Ill just do keep focussing on the real boring stuff :P -- Redneckerz (talk) 21:00, 23 February 2020 (CET)

2020-05[edit]

I just noticed that the featured article is still UAC Ultra of March. Since Eternal and 64 have been released, i like to resume with a throw back piece, and i like to nominate Final Doom for this part. -- Redneckerz (talk) 22:59, 13 April 2020 (CET)

Not of March, but I made an incomplete update. ;) Final Doom is a good one, but there is the option to save it for its 25th anniversary (...in June 2021). For next month, I was going to go with the already proposed Linguortal, unless something else should go up first. --Xymph (talk) 16:22, 13 April 2020 (CDT)
That's fine by me :) -- Redneckerz (talk) 23:32, 13 April 2020 (CET)
I also support Linguortal, if it wasn't clear above.  Thanks, Ryan W (living fossil) 07:58, 14 April 2020 (CDT)

2020-06[edit]

Next month is the 25th anniversary of the first of the Doom novels, making that article a strong candidate to be featured.
A suitable alternative would be EDGE, celebrating its 20th anniversary. --Xymph (talk) 08:48, 15 May 2020 (CDT)

A few additional suggestions, mostly ports though: Deathless, ATTE (series), WolfDoom, Action Doom 2 and ScoreDoom and The King Doom Experience ---- Redneckerz (talk) 15:59, 15 May 2020 (CDT)
I waited a week, but still nothing's jumping out at me, unfortunately.  I could support Doom novels or EDGE on grounds of thoroughness and having a small but fanatical fan base.  :>  When the wiki was new, a few users worked hard to create coherent summaries of each book and cross-reference to every applicable game element.
IIRC ScoreDoom also had a following, years ago, but the article still seems thin on the mechanical aspect — ideally we'd describe how tactics change when scoring is emphasized.
I'd suggest delaying The King Doom Experience because we already featured a vintage lobby recently, but it jogs a memory for me, of spending considerable time (or at least considerable googling) on that set of articles.  Why did I do so?  Was the software famous?  Was it innovative?  Was I simply trying to collect all known information before archive.org misplaced it?  I wish I could remember.  HTH / KUTGW folks.  Ryan W (living fossil) 19:38, 28 May 2020 (CDT)
I'll second the Doom novels. --Quasar (talk) 00:28, 29 May 2020 (CDT)
I'll thrice the suggestion of the Doom novels. Seems an obvious choice for next month. --Redneckerz (talk) 09:17, 29 May 2020 (CDT)
May be new here, but I think the Doom novels deserve the next spot. They are not that great for a novel reader, but they provide some sweet joy for doomers and are quite iconic. Also, the covers are just great. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Endless01 (talkcontribs) .
Thanks for the retroactive approval, I suppose; the article went up two weeks ago. ;-) --Xymph (talk) 04:34, 15 June 2020 (CDT)

2020-07[edit]

For July, no immediately obvious anniversaries come to mind, although I did encounter Action Doom which came out 16 years ago. But after featuring a number of articles about old(er) material, we can also cover to some relatively recent things, such as ThreeA one-sixth-scale Doom marine or McFarlane Toys Doom Slayer action figure. Thoughts? As always, alternate proposals should pertain to articles that are stable and sufficiently fleshed out, and include an image suitable for the featured box. --Xymph (talk) 05:09, 15 June 2020 (CDT)

A good point about older vs newer; I wonder if there are other such trends.
I can endorse the ThreeA figure for its narrative hook (not meeting expectations).  Second choice would be Action Doom, which is indeed more fleshed out than many mod overviews, but ideally should have much more technical exposition — readers might well arrive expecting us to confirm or deny all the hype about innovation.  :>  HTH.  Ryan W (living fossil) 14:48, 21 June 2020 (CDT)

2020-08[edit]

I feel like Super NES has become a hot topic and is also one of our best articles about a console Doom port, so I feel like it would be a good candidate. --Quasar (talk) 05:01, 18 July 2020 (CDT)

Good suggestion. I'm glad the impetus of posting nominations doesn't fall solely on me this time :) but couldn't resist checking for anniversaries. And to make the choice of featured article a bit harder, next month John Carmack will turn 50. The wiki could send him birthday wishes via the featured corner, if not the whole month then at least for that date. --Xymph (talk) 06:17, 19 July 2020 (CDT)
No complaints there. There is a lot of work done on the SNES source code already, particularly by xttl (Who in general is a very accomplished hacker, also on Vanilla Doom). Ill resume work on the Wiki shortly. --Redneckerz (talk) 12:02, 19 July 2020 (CDT)
No objection. Having both the Super NES port as the featured article and a congratulatory birthday corner for John Carmack would be the "best of both worlds" choice for me.--InDOOMnesia (talk) 17:26, 19 July 2020 (CDT)
Sounds good to me.  The technical exposition here has really come a long way — thanks again to all the researchers!
For anyone wishing to nominate Carmack, full disclosure (given my reputation for revising articles with a machete): please see the older version and talk page for some content that was discovered but excluded.  Thanks, Ryan W (living fossil) 01:14, 23 July 2020 (CDT)

2020-09[edit]

Perhaps a bit too early, but it wouldn't hurt to try, right? With the return of the 3DGE Forum board, I would like to vote for EDGE as September's featured article nomination.--InDOOMnesia (talk) 23:27, 8 August 2020 (CDT)

No worries, nominations could be posted as early as the 1st of the preceding month. EDGE is certainly a suitable feature, but as usual I looked at notable anniversaries for the next two months. Of the articles that haven't been featured yet, the 25th anniversary of The Abyss' release next month could also be considered. So perhaps that in September and EDGE in October? --Xymph (talk) 04:21, 9 August 2020 (CDT)
Late reply, but that sounds like a nice idea. I'll wait for others' voice on this too. --InDOOMnesia (talk) 07:41, 19 August 2020 (CDT)

2020-11[edit]

With no obvious anniversaries, strif^Hving for variety, and harking back to a nomination from last year, how about featuring Capture the Chalice next month? --Xymph (talk) 06:37, 26 October 2020 (CDT)

It'd be timely with the recent re-release of SVE on Switch and corresponding update on the other platforms. --Gez (talk) 11:32, 26 October 2020 (CDT)
Oh good, I wasn't aware, as that's not mentioned on the SVE page (yet?). --Xymph (talk) 13:14, 26 October 2020 (CDT)
I was about to come back and endorse after seeing this, a reminder that CTF doesn't get enough credit for its place in community history.  But Gez's reason is even better.  :>  Ryan W (living fossil) 06:14, 27 October 2020 (CDT)

2020-12[edit]

Next month is the 25th anniversary of the release of the Master Levels for Doom II, making it a most suitable feature. --Xymph (talk) 06:27, 10 November 2020 (CST)
