Doomworld Mega Project 2016 is a collaborative megawad, containing forty-nine maps from as many different mappers, plus a hub map for ZDoom-based ports which allow the levels to be played in any order. As with previous projects, it accepted any maps for Doom II, regardless of theme, difficult, quality, or target source port, though this time, in order to make compilation of the final WAD simpler, custom textures were not allowed, except for some useful waterfall edits. Mappers were also not allowed to use the MAP07 or MAP30 slots, or make maps potentially damaging to the user (e.g. by using scripts to change port settings, or using zip bombs).

The project was planned to be led by scifista42, as with the previous year's project. However, long delays in the final release of the project meant that a 2016 project was still not underway by the end of the summer. On 10 September, 2016, TimeOfDeath, the original host of the projects, returned to run the 2016 project through to the end of the year. The turnout was high considering the tighter time restriction in comparison to previous years, and an initial version of the compiled megawad was made available on 5 January, 2017. It was uploaded to the /idgames archive on 13 April, 2017.
Unlike in previous years, the WAD is not divided into multiple files - all fifty maps are contained inside a single WAD file.
