E1 Contest is a 2001 megawad. It is a compilation of 15 levels in the style of the Knee-Deep in the Dead episode by multiple authors, one map per author. It was the fruit of a contest announced by the extinct website Doom Center during the E1 Week which took place in the first seven days of July 2001. John Romero was sent these levels and he would examine and rate them in order to proclaim four winners. The author of the top rated level received as prize a box of The Ultimate Doom with all items signed by John Romero.

Guidelines and rules[edit]

  • There were two weeks to complete the levels, the deadline being July 15, 2001.
  • Levels were to imitate the style of the Knee-Deep in the Dead episode.
  • Authors were to attempt to adhere mostly to the shareware resources, and absolutely no external resources were allowed.
  • Levels were to be playable in a Boom-compatible source port.
  • All levels were required to replace the E1M1 slot.
  • Any MIDI was fine, but the use of MIDI from a level of Knee-Deep in the Dead episode was encouraged.
  • Only new and original maps created from scratch were accepted.

Contributors[edit]

The filenames of the included PWADs and their respective authors were the following (in order of appearance in the compiled PWAD). It should be noted that certain authors decided to release, at their own desire, versions of their respective maps, either as standalone releases or as part of a multi-level release. The final PWAD was actually compiled by Boris Iwanski (Tarin).

Winners[edit]

  • 1st: walld1e1.wad by Jeffrey Crenshaw.
  • 2nd: jxt-e1m1.wad by Jay Trent.
  • 3rd: fred-e1.wad by Fredrik Johansson.
  • 4th: tobiasm.wad by Tobias Münch.
