E1 Contest is a 2001 megawad. It is a compilation of 15 levels in the style of the Knee-Deep in the Dead episode by multiple authors, one map per author. It was the fruit of a contest announced by the extinct website Doom Center during the E1 Week which took place in the first 7 days of July, 2001. John Romero was sent these levels and he would examine and rate them in order to proclame four winners. The author of the top rated level received as prize a box of The Ultimate Doom, with all items signed by John Romero.

The guidelines and rules were:

  • There were two weeks to complete the levels, being the deadline July 15, 2001.
  • Levels should imitate the style of the Knee-Deep in the Dead episode.
  • Authors should try to stick mainly to shareware resources, and absolutely no external resouces were allowed.
  • Levels should be playable in a Boom-compatible source port.
  • They should replace the E1M1 slot.
  • Any MIDI was fine, but the use of MIDI from a level of Knee-Deep in the Dead episode was encouraged.
  • Only new and original maps created from the scratch were accepted.

Authors represented, and the name of their respective PWADs, were the following (in order of appearance in the compiled PWAD). It should be noted that certain authors decided to release, at their own desire, versions of their respective maps, either as standlone releases or as part of a multi-level release.

The winners were:

  • 1st: Jeffrey Crenshaw.
  • 2nd: Justin Townsend.
  • 3rd: Fredrik Johansson.
  • 4th: Tobias Muench.
