The cell is the unit of ammo used by the plasma rifle and BFG 9000. Each BFG shot consumes 40 cells, while the plasma rifle can be fired one cell at a time (although this takes some concentration, as its rate of fire is very high).

An energy cell is an ammo container used to power the plasma gun and the BFG9000 in Doom and Doom II, and additionally also the Unmaker in Doom 64. In the original games it is depicted as a small dark gray container shaped like a box and displaying small green lights or Light-emitting diodes, while in Doom 64 it looks more like three different ammo containers attached together. It holds enough energy to fire the plasma rifle 20 times (or 40 on the I'm Too Young To Die and Nightmare! skill levels).  While the plasma gun can be discharged one unit at a time – with difficulty, due to its rapid rate of fire – each BFG shot consumes 2 whole cells (or 1 on NM and ITYTD). The Unmaker on the other hand has a different ammo consumption depending on how many Demon Keys the player has collected, ranging from one at zero keys to three at full keys.

Perhaps confusingly, the games' instruction manuals show "Cell" as an ammo pickup.  This pickup actually contains 20 cells (40 on the I'm Too Young To Die and Nightmare! skill levels), and the game calls it an energy cell. Other sources call this pickup a cell charge.

Each shot from the plasma gun does 5-40 hit points of damage, determined using Doom's pseudorandom number generator.  BFG damage calculations are more complex; a direct hit inflicts 100-800 points, after which additional energy damage is discharged, that can take the total damage into the thousands of hit points. Each attack from the Unmaker (visually a laser but in practice a hitscan attack) deals between 10 and 80 points of damage.

An intersting note is that like the shotgun, the plasma rifle was created from an existing toy gun. The link shows a dart-shooting, M-60-like toy that was popular in the early nineties (back then, it was tan).  The area in front of the bipod could be detached to use as a separate weapon.  The designers simply turned the detachment around so that it was shown backwards.  It is easier to discern this when your marine lifts the weapon after each volley of shots.

This article is about the Doom item. For the Strife ammunition type, see Energy cell (Strife).
An energy cell in a secret area in Doom E2M1: Deimos Anomaly.
An energy cell next to a staircase in Doom 64 MAP07: Research Lab.

An energy cell is an ammo container used to power the plasma gun and the BFG9000 in Doom and Doom II, and additionally also the Unmaker in Doom 64. In the original games it is depicted as a small dark gray container shaped like a box and displaying small green lights or LEDs, while in Doom 64 it looks more like three different ammo containers attached together.
