Did you know that in the original Doom games the speed of projectiles does not take the vertical dimension into account? For example, this causes monsters' fireballs to travel extremely fast when fired from above or below.

BFG9000

The BFG9000 is the ultimate weapon in the classic Doom series. Although somewhat unwieldy to aim, it can inflict thousands of points of damage over a wide angular field. Each shot produces a huge plasma ball followed by numerous invisible rays after impact. Early deathmatch maps sometimes omitted the BFG for fear of upsetting play balance.

The BFG has become a trope over the years, widely imitated in other FPS games (including by id Software) and referenced in popular culture as often as any specific Doom element.
