Gargoyle (Doom Eternal)

A gargoyle.

The gargoyle is a new monster introduced in Doom Eternal. It appears as a small, frail humanoid with bat-like wings, falx-shaped arms, and faun-like legs.

Tactical analysis[edit]

Shooting a gargoyle while it is in the air instantly stuns it. It can spit acid as a ranged attack. It typically avoids melee combat head on and prefers to flank from behind; it can attack at high speed with its blades.

While they are not very dangerous individually, gargoyles tend to appear in large numbers, which can be dangerous if they are allowed to overwhelm the player or if they are supporting stronger monsters.

Gargoyles have a bit more health than imps and zombies, with 300 HP (120 staggered).

Lore[edit]

Unlike most demons, the gargoyle is said to be native to the world of Sentinel Prime, where they have plagued the Night Sentinels for centuries. They were well known for their ability to fly over the city's walls, taking any available opportunity to massacre a great number of people before returning to their native wastelands. It required vigilant and skillful marksmen to intercept them.

Glory kills[edit]

  • The Slayer grabs the gargoyle by the head and decapitates it with the Doomblade.
  • The Slayer cuts off the demon's legs and then its head.
  • The Slayer punches the gargoyle in the face before stabbing it in the neck.
  • The gargoyle attempts to fly away, being cut in half with the Doomblade.
  • The Slayer grabs the gargoyle's arm and cuts it in half shoulder to hip.
  • The Slayer grabs the gargoyle's arm and uses its arm blade to split its own head in two.
  • The Slayer chops off the gargoyle's arm and cuts its head off with the severed limbs blade.
  • The Slayer plunges the Doomblade into the gargoyle's chest and then kicks it away.
  • The Slayer hacks off the gargoyle's legs and kicks it away.
  • The Slayer drives his fist into the demon's face before bisecting it with a single swing of the Doomblade.
  • The Slayer cuts off the gargoyle's left leg before stabbing it in the head
  • The Slayer sweeps the gargoyle's legs from under it, causing the demon to fall and impale itself on the Doomblade.

Pre-release[edit]

QuakeCon reveal[edit]

The gargoyle was first featured in the QuakeCon 2018 game play reveal. Several instances of the monster are encountered in the city in particular, but they are all eliminated at a distance without being able to effectively attack. As the monster was unnamed in this reveal, temporary fan-given names were assigned, including "harpy demon" and "flying demon".

Google Stadia footage[edit]

In the Google Stadia game play footage, it can be seen shooting yellow fireballs at the player, and, after it is killed, a codex entry message appears with the confirmed name "Gargoyle".[1]

Trivia[edit]

  • A flying demon with a similar nature called the "imp" was originally detailed in the Doom Bible by Tom Hall during Doom's initial development, before the name of imp was reassigned to what was then known as the "demon trooper." It is presently unconfirmed whether or not this detail has had an influence on this new monster design.
  • Winged demons are also seen invading the city in a concept storyboard for Doom 4 1.0. It is unknown if the cancelled Doom 4 had any significant influence on Doom Eternal.
  • This demon could have been inspired by an enemy of the same name from Monolith's 1997 game, Blood. Its coloring is similar to the Blood version.
