HI_START and HI_END are the delimiter marker lumps for high resolution textures. Originating from GZDoom, they have been backported to ZDoom in 2006 and since then adopted by a few other ports.
Graphics in this namespace are used as replacement for normal graphics of the same name supplied in another namespace. They can be sprite or full textures. In implementing ports, the graphic in the high-res namespace will be scaled to the dimensions of its normal counterpart. Using this system allows not to have to define the precise scaling of the high-res graphics in a control lump or through a special image format.
If there is no counterpart, the scale used will be 1:1.
