MAP13: Workin' on the Chain Gang is the thirteenth map of 1 Monster. It was designed by Ronald Lubbelinkhof (Dutch Devil) with later edits by Robert Eckhardt (Ichor), and uses the song "Dark Halls" from Doom.

Like all maps in the megawad, the map features only one type of monster, in this case the heavy weapon dude. It is set in an elaborately detailed UAC facility.

Essentials

Ammo and health are scarce on this map, and the enemies are deadly, so it is imperative that you move carefully and avoid staying in the open while there are enemies nearby. Preferably hide behind corners and kill the monsters as they come.

Leave through the door, head down the corridor, and when you make it to the large hub area, go through the passage to the south into the winding corridor. At the end of the corridor press the switch. Go back down the corridor, and head back to the northern part of the large area. A small, white door is now open. Enter and head down the corridor until you come to the room with a red switch. Press it to open the double doors, then press the switch inside to raise stairs. Go up the stairs and get the red key.

Go back to the hub area, head to the southern part (near the blue bars) and walk west, to the end of the balcony where you will find the red key switch. Press it to open the red key doors. Head inside, press the switch at the west end of the room, get the blue key and go back up. Head back to the corridor at the beginning of the level; the blue key switch can be found there. Press it to raise the blue bars.

Head through where the bars were, and go south, then open the big door. Press the switch at the south end of this room to open a door near the room's entrance. Behind it is the yellow key. Grab it, leave the room, and open the yellow key door opposite of where the blue bars were. Inside is the exit switch.

Other points of interest

After you press the switch to lower the lift to the blue key, you can enter a pool of acid to the west and find some items in there. Press the switch in the pool to lower the lift again.

Secrets

  1. In the southern passage that leads to the first switch, there is a section of blue wall at the corner. Open it to find a teleporter which will bring you to an outside area with a rocket launcher, three (Easy and Hard) or six (Medium) rockets, a box of rockets (Hard only), and a medikit. Entering this teleporter triggers the secret. (sector 964)
  2. In the river of nukage beyond the red key door, step underneath the southernmost nukage-fall. A lift will lower to the north; pass through (sector 1327) to access a section of nukage with a stimpack, a backpack, 4 shotgun shells, a rocket, and a supercharge.
  3. Beyond the blue key bars, opposite of the door to the southernmost room, there is a computer wall with a green light visible on the right. Shoot the light to reveal a partial invisibility nearby. (sector 731)
