MAP23: Tower of Babel is the twenty-third level of the PlayStation and Sega Saturn versions of Doom. It is based on E2M8: Tower of Babel as a console conversion. The author of the original map is Sandy Petersen. Unlike the PC-version counterpart this level is an ending part of Inferno, replacing E3M8: Dis.

This level should not be confused with the level of the same name appearing as a renamed level in PlayStation and Saturn ports of Doom. It is followed by Limbo and will lead to Hell Beneath (which is a part of Thy Flesh Consumed) after completion with no any text screen.

It features a boss battle with the Cyberdemon. Aside from having the Cyberdemon and lost souls the map features optional-to-kill mancubi.

Comparison of versions

  • The surrounding outside room is rectangular-like rather than diamond-like.
  • A room with a portal to the north of the map was added as an exit. After killing the cyberdemon the level does not automatically ends yet but instead the metal door opens to let the player in that room meaning the player has to find the exit manually.
  • Mancubi from Doom II were added scattered into the large arena to increase the difficulty. Four of them spawn on Hurt Me Plenty skill level and eight are spawned on Ultra-Violence skill. None of them spawn on first two easy skill levels, however.
  • Other floor texture variations are used: the arena uses grass instead of dark gray rock and the four rooms next to the start, as well as the starting room itself, use dark gray rock instead of a silver rock.
  • In the starting room there are corpses of people instead of barons of hell.

Saturn version features some changes from a PlayStation port:

  • Cityscape picture from Doom II is used as a sky instead of animated hellish flames.
