MAP31: Vorticon is the regular secret map of Doom 2 the Way id Did. It was designed by Brendt Pantley (Megalyth) and Xaser and uses the music track "Make It Tighter" from the fifth episode of the Commander Keen series. The par time defined in the DEHACKED lump is 4:30.

The level itself is inspired by the game Commander Keen and features textures, two new enemies and five various levels of the original game, interpreted into Doom and merged into one level.

WalkthroughEdit

EssentialsEdit

You begin in the central hub, which has five structures that you can step into to teleport to the other areas of the level. The three northernmost structures go to areas with keys, the west structure goes to the normal exit once you have all three keys, and the east structure goes to the secret exit.

Red keyEdit

Go to the green mountains on the north side of the hub to teleport to the western area of the map, then head straight forward to a chainsaw and east to drop into a pit; a yellow lift will lower, but you should ignore it for now. Kill a couple of waiting gargs then climb up the yellow blocks in the north-west corner (they are used throughout this area as steps and route markers), then run north across a pink platform in the middle of a fire pit to reach the other side. Go to the east side of the next area and follow the yellow blocks to reach the top of the wall, then collect the health bonuses at the top and kill two more gargs before climbing into a yellow tunnel. Run through the tunnel to jump down to a yellow platform and reach the red ledge beyond it, then go round two corners to another tunnel and follow it to another ledge. Head east over some more blocks to a third tunnel and follow it round, then run west across a gap to reach a ledge with a red pressure pad - this is one of two pads you need to stand on to reach the red key.

Step west to drop back into the entrance area, then climb up the blocks in the south-east corner to the top and run west to jump across a gap and reach the green blocks on the other side. Climb up some more yellow blocks and run east to jump over a fire pit and reach the red area on the other side, kill two or three more gargs then enter the yellow tunnel in the south-west corner to reach the next room. Go to the east end to climb up more yellow blocks, follow the green path round then step across two yellow poles to reach a ledge that leads to another yellow tunnel. Go through the tunnel to a walkway and follow it round to the doorway on the opposite side, then run north until you cross a gap and reach a second pressure pad. Step on it, then drop to the floor below and head east into the next room. Climb up two yellow blocks to reach another ledge, then run north over the platform you raised to reach the red keycard. Now climb to the ledge on the east side of the room and enter the purple teleporter to return to the hub.

Blue keyEdit

Back in the hub, enter the blue castle at the north end to teleport to the northern area of the map, then go through the large archway ahead to reach an entrance hall - two gargs are waiting behind the columns on Ultra-Violence and Nightmare skill levels. Head up the stairs to a square room and kill four gargs that emerge from the walls, then enter the black-floored corridor at the back of the room and continue west past two more gargs. Follow the next corridor to a T-junction, then take the east path and climb the steps until you see four barons of Hell in a pit. Ignore the barons and step west to a yellow teleporter, which will send you to a block above the pit holding the blue keycard, then look through the window and shoot the chain holding up the block, which will cause it to drop on the barons and kill them. Enter the teleporter again and collect the blue keycard, then go back downstairs and take the west path at the T-junction to find a purple teleporter leading back to the hub.

Yellow key and exitEdit

Back in the hub, enter the blue hills at the north side of the hub to teleport to the eastern area of the map. Go straight forward to some blue blocks and use the steps on their south side to climb out, then head east along a red path until you can drop into an area with purple blocks. Run east along two purple paths to get past a fire pit, then go north into an area with a large purple/blue staircase and run up it to jump over another fire pit and reach the steps on the other side. Kill any waiting gargs and yorps on the east side of the pit, then enter the small doorway at its south end and follow the path into a room with one or two more gargs. Climb the stairs here to a red ledge and go north and west to find the yellow keycard, then go back the way you came to find a purple teleporter that goes back to the hub.

Back in the hub, enter the gray building on the west side to teleport to the southern area of the map, then go straight forward to the red building ahead and pass through its entrance to get a box of shotgun shells. The building is a maze of tunnels and steps inhabited by gargs, and you need to make your way to the room at the south end to find three locked doors. Open all the doors and step into the purple doorway behind them to reveal an exit door, then pass through it and step on the sky floor in front of you to go to MAP16: Cul-de-sac.

Secret exitEdit

To access the secret exit you must kill all the yorps in the level, some of which are linked to secrets. Once you have done so, follow the directions for secrets #5 and #6 below to find the exit to MAP32: Well of Wishes.

SecretsEdit

  1. At the south end, head to the west side with purple blocks and head to the north-west end. Go through the purple blocks from the north end to get a megaarmor inside the purple blocks. (sector 560)
  2. Head to the east side of the south end and go south through the fire zone. Find small, gray blocks to the east side and take them up, then head south to an area with a BFG9000. (sector 582)
  3. At the west end, head to the south side and climb the steps until you see a yellow wall just before the yellow hall going north. Lower it, enter, and lower the next yellow wall. Head west and another yellow wall lowers. Jump west and head north and around to a backpack. (sector 1008)
  4. At the east end, climb the steps, continue east, and open a blue wall in a small alcove to the south. Follow the path around to get a super shotgun. (sector 727)
  5. Take the first warp to the pyramid. Head north-west of it to some gray dots. Hug the wall as you head up to enter a secret passage. (sector 48)
  6. After killing all of the yorps, head past secret #5, across the fire platforms, and to the gray area. Climb the steps and press the switch at the end to raise a bridge going north. Head up to the east to a purple area leading to the secret exit. (sector 104)
