No Rest for the Living is the title of the new Doom II expansion set developed by Nerve Software for the upcoming release of Doom II on the XBLA.

Episode or campaign?

The episode consists of nine levels in all. As Doom II did not have episodes per se calling No Rest for the Living an episode is technically a misnomer. The new maps are a separate selectable campaign at the inception of the game, in a fashion similar to Doom's episode selection. Selecting "Hell on Earth" will propel the player into the classic 32 map Doom II campaign, whereas selecting "No Rest for the Living" will start the new 9 map addition.

According to Nerve Software boss Brandon James the expansion set "continues on Earth after Hell's forces have [seemingly] been vanquished".

Previews

From the few previews given to Xbox gaming magazines[1], No Rest for the Living will be "hardcore" and designed for cooperative play in challenging levels. As of writing two level names are known; "The Earth Base" and "The Pain Labs"[2].

On February 10, 2010, msxbox-world.com released gameplay footage of the port, including a video of the new episode[3]. The footage has since been removed per the publisher's request.

However, gameplay video from the Hell on Earth campaign is available on msxbox world's YouTube channel[4]. The footage does not include the new episode, but it does show the episode selection menu and the new intermission backdrop.

Release date

No specific release date is set, although a Q1 release during 2010 has been mentioned in articles. However, on some sites a release date of 12/31/10 is given. This does not mean December 31, 2010; it is a roundabout way of conveying an unknown release date "during 2010".
