Nuts is a single-level PWAD for Doom II meant for limit removing source ports. It was designed by Bernard De Windt (B.P.R.D) and uses as its music track a MIDI sequence of "Kashmir" by Led Zeppelin.

Nuts is a massive slaughter map featuring a deliberately outrageous number of enemies, known for slowing down even the most powerful of computers to a crawl upon release. It was created to test the /idgames archive upload function for the author's contemporary work, Equinox, and is now remembered as a quintessential joke WAD. Two years later, it received two sequels, Nuts 2 and Nuts 3.

Nuts has become an extremely well known map in the community. In 2003, it was added to the Top 10 Infamous WADs, and in 2018 was featured in Doomworld's Top 100 Most Memorable Maps, placing fourth. It continues to elicit interest among YouTube channels dedicated to Doom and speedrunners.

Description[edit]

The mod's irreverent nature begins with the story, set on the planet of Litrivin IV where the final and largest Hell army ever seen has gathered. The Doom marine is sent alone to confront it with only a pistol because he had gotten drunk at his superior General's birthday party the year before.

The mod features two large rooms with an extremely high number of monsters (over 10,000 on any skill level), and was at the time of its release practically impossible to complete as the game would slow down to a crawl and freeze or crash upon waking the enemies up with gunfire. It has, however, become playable in recent years thanks to improvements in hardware as well as source ports. While there is ample ammo as well as various powerups around the map, the difficulty is very high and there is not enough ammo to be able to kill all enemies directly. Because of this, the map presents an interesting challenge for UV max speedruns.
