Realm of Chaos is a megawad that contains 32 levels released in 1996 by The Macintosh Team. As the name of the mapping team implies, the wad was exclusively built by Doom mappers on Apple Macintosh computers, representing the most well known mappers of that scene at the time. The release is split between a WAD file containing the maps and texture files ("RlmChaos.WAD"), and an optional file containing some sprite replacements ("Rlmsprt.WAD").

Story

The story involves the protagonist starting out on the UAC base on Mars under attack by Demons, with the objective of reaching the Mars Starport in an effort to board a flight bound to Earth. After finding that Earth itself has also been invaded and occupied by the forces of Hell, the protagonist fights them off on the planet until he is captured and taken to Hell itself as a prisoner. Managing to escape, it is his final mission to track down the Four Lords of Hell in order to put an end to the Demon invasion.

This WAD features three built-in demos. All require Doom II v1.9 to view them. The demo levels are:

Trivia

  • As the Macintosh port of Doom did not have demo functionality, the demos for Realm of Chaos had to be recorded outside of the Mac environment, the only part of the project to have been made in such a way.
  • With Clint Sago as the lead, the project got started by mappers and WAD reviewers who gathered at MacDoom Review, a HyperCard-based magazine put together by Dave Kramer.
