Due to the slow release of the gas, the Player is not immediately affected. He races through the facility, fighting past Betruger's minions - including the tiny but vicious [[Cherub]]s and the enormous Mancubus. He makes it to Main Environmental Control just as the gas begins to reach toxic levels.  He accesses the controls and vents the gas in time. The Player then heads to the Monorail.

The player races through the facility, fighting numerous enemies and avoiding toxic gas leaks everywhere. At one point they stumble upon a room that is also locked due to gases, so they need to find a control panel to vent the gases away. The player has to go through the lower levels of facility and at some point appears in a large room filled with waste where they have to fight with a new, mini-boss-like enemy - the mancubi.

After riding the elevator back to the upper level, the player appears in a room severely polluted with gas and they start taking damage from it. They need to rush to three terminals and activate the air filtering in each of them, thus cleaning the room of gases and unlocking the hazard door to the monorail. The player returns to that door and exits the level.

Doom 3 maps
"There's nothing left for you, but a slow death, as your lungs fill with toxic gasses."
― Malcolm Betruger [source]

Recycling - Sector 2: Waste Recycling Center is the thirteenth level of Doom 3. A trap is sprung on the player by Betruger, who reveals he sent the transmission if the player hasn't already, slowly filling the building with toxic gases. The mancubus is introduced in a cutscene and cherubs make their first appearances.

Summary

Entering the sector 2 of the recycling plant, the player is contacted by Malcolm Betruger over the VidCom. Betruger either "thanks" the player for contacting the Earth Fleet, or says that he'll simply contact the Fleet himself. He then gloats about his plan to capture the Fleet once it arrives, and use it to bring his demonic legions to Earth. Toxic gas then begins to flood the facility.

The player proceeds further, and after a short while they find the door to the monorail, but it's sealed due to the large level of toxicity in the facility, so the air filtration system needs to be activated.
