SLADE

SLADE is a modern, open-source, cross-platform map editor (and, since version 3, also a WAD editor) for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux created and maintained by Simon Judd (with code contributions by Gez to version 3).
History
- SLADE 1 stopped at version 1.13, released on 23 May 2006.
- SLADE 2 reached beta on 7 June 2007, but was abandoned afterwards.
- SLADE 3 is currently in development. It is a merging of SLADE and SLumpEd.
- SLADE 3.1 was released on 20 June 2014, after over 3 years of development.
- SLADE 3.1.1 was released on 28 February 2016.

- Lump manipulation in WADs and ZIP (STORE and DEFLATE only at the moment)
- Ability to open archives-within-archives
- Ability to open many other game archive formats (Duke Nukem 3D GRP files, Blood RFF files, Shadowcaster DAT and LIB files, Quake PAK files, etc.)
- Playback for many audio formats, including:
- MUS, MIDI, HMI, HMP, XMI, played through FluidSynth
- Doom's sound format (only extant utility able of handling correctly the padding bytes)
- Doom's PC speaker sound effects
- Several simple PCM formats used in games contemporary to Doom (Blood, Duke Nukem 3D, Rise of the Triad, Wolfenstein 3D, etc.)

- All ZDoom-specific formats (IMGZ, FON1, FON2)

- The formats used by Shadowcaster, Quake, Heretic II, Duke Nukem 3D, Rise of the Triad, and more
- Palette generation and modification

- Support for editing TEXTUREx lumps, including the Alpha and Strife variants

Map editing is not finished yet, but UDMF and Doom64 EX are supported in addition to the Doom and Hexen map formats.
