Shadows of the Nightmare Realm (or SoTNR for short) is a four-level (plus one secret and one start map) PK3 for GZDoom created by Remilia Scarlet and released in May 2017. The levels are made as a cohesive unit of nightmarish sets themed around horror and abstract design. The story is about Doom's protagonist becoming conscious inside his own nightmares, each one manipulated by a Baleful One.

The mapset is heavily inspired by Lovecraftian horror and uses custom assets to evoke a feeling of dread and dreamlike states, such as new graphics, textures, enemies, non-euclidean geometry and various scripts. The music is entirely done by Remilia Scarlet. It was selected as one of the winners of the 2017 Cacowards.

Since the levels make use of GZDoom features, it is required to load lights.pk3 and brightmaps.pk3 for the intended experience. It also uses 3D models, high resolution textures and dynamic lights.

Custom monsters[edit]

Shadows of the Nightmare Realm implements two custom monsters via a DECORATE lump, both occurring in the final level:

Illusion Master
A modified boss brain with 800 hit points.
Cyberdemon2
A powerful cyberdemon with 6000 hit points and pain chance 8.
