Smooth Doom is a gameplay mod for the GZDoom source port that enhances and extends the animations of Doom and Doom II's monsters, weapons, items, and decorations, making them appear more fluid in motion, by adding new frames, consisting of additional sprite graphics, as well as extra visual effects. The mod was created by Gifty, drawing on a variety of resources and contributions by different modders, and was first released on the ZDoom forums on March 25, 2014.[1]

Smooth Doom builds on the smooth weapons mod by Per Kristian Risvik and was further inspired by the visual enhancements to animations showcased in Brutal Doom; though unlike Brutal Doom, Smooth Doom does not make any changes to the gameplay itself, being a visual enhancement only.

The mod automatically applies dynamic lights to objects like in-flight rockets, powerups, and light sources such as lamps and torches; makes all monsters except for the lost soul, pain elemental, cyberdemon, and spiderdemon able to be gibbed; changes the blood colors for the Hell nobles and cacodemon to green and blue, respectively; and adds an increased amount of blood splatters to most death animations. The mod also includes new sounds for gibs, spent ammo casings, and movement through liquids. Optional enhancements can be toggled on from an in-game options menu, such as extra particle effects, additional death animations, spent ammo casings, enhanced gore, weapon recoil, and screen shake; later updates of the mod also added the option to use Doom 64 weapons as well as a mode that gives Doom guy black gloves.

Over the years, Smooth Doom has served as a basis and resource for other mods aiming to increase the fluidity of animations of vanilla weapons and/or monsters, with several mods in existence that ported parts of Smooth Doom's feature set to other source ports.

List of other notable smooth animation mods[edit]

  • Smooth Weapon Animations (Doomworld forums thread/idgames archive link) by Per Kristian Risvik, first released on the Doomworld forums on May 3, 2009, for the Doomsday source port, is in many ways the original smooth weapons mod that served as the basis for most mods on this list. Only weapon animations are enhanced, and fewer frames are used overall in comparison to Smooth Doom, with the chainsaw and BFG being left untouched. Not long after the initial release, ports to ZDoom and the Eternity Engine were added, and eventually the mod was converted to Boom-compatible, though with the number of additional frames reduced considerably.
  • Smooth Weapons Enhanced (ZDoom forums thread) by NightFright, first released on the ZDoom forums on April 20, 2012, for the GZDoom source port, is an enhancement of Per Kristian's original smooth weapons mod, adding improvements and fixes like compatibility with the Minor Sprite Fixing Project as well as additional animation frames; over the years the mod was revised several times and new content was added. The mod also came with a Black Gloves Edition, based on the sprites from IceFreezy's blakglov2.wad (itself based on Grimm's blakblov.wad from 2004), which was merged into the standard edition with version 2.0 (July 12, 2019).
  • Black Ops (Doomworld forums thread) by VGA, first released on November 29, 2015, is a port of the Black Gloves Edition's weapons of NightFright's Smooth Weapons Enhanced mod to Doom Retro (and later Crispy Doom) using DEHEXTRA, though lacking any of the optional features like ammo casings and extra particle effects.
  • SMOOTHED (Doomworld forums thread) by VGA, first released on February 9, 2016, is a port of Smooth Doom's enhanced monster animations to Doom Retro (and later Crispy Doom) using DEHEXTRA. It is compatible and intended to be used with VGA's earlier smooth weapons mod Black Ops.
  • Vanilla Doom smooth weapons (Doomworld forums thread) by Simon Howard (Fraggle), first released on September 19, 2018, represents a fully vanilla-compatible DeHackEd port of Per Kristian's original smooth weapons mod made with DEH9000, an advanced DeHackEd editor that Fraggle created for this project.
  • SAB Doom (ZDoom forums thread) by Chris J. Mullen (CeeJay), initially released on December 8, 2019, is a port of Smooth Doom to EDGE that comes in two separate releases, labeled Phase 1 and Phase 2. The former is a direct conversion of Smooth Doom with some minor changes to sprites and animations, while the latter, which was released on November 26, 2021, only works with EDGE-Classic and incorporates many additional cosmetic effects as well as ambient sound effects.
  • Smooth Eternity (Doomworld forums thread) by TheMightyHeracross and first released on June 12, 2020, is a recreation of Smooth Doom for the Eternity Engine using EDF, including monster and weapons animations, alternate death animations, and colored blood, but lacking ammo casings, monster or decoration variants, and black glove/Doom 64 reskins.
  • EXTRAsmooth (Doomworld forums post) by Scuba Steve, first released on July 7, 2022, makes use of DEHEXTRA to convert Per Kristian's smooth weapons mod to DeHackEd, removing the need to repurpose states from other actors in the game, thereby increasing compatibility of the mod with other DeHackEd patches. Includes additional weapon animation sprites made by Scuba, as well as editing of existing ones.
  • Smooth Doom MBF21 (Doomworld forums thread) by Alaux, released on January 5, 2023, is a DeHackEd recreation of Smooth Doom for source ports with support for both MBF21 and DSDHacked. Though not a one-to-one port, the mod includes all the main features of Smooth Doom like spent ammo casings, extra death animations, and particle effects, besides the enhanced weapons and monster animations, though different blood colors are omitted. It also comes with a Classic Edition that includes only the enhanced animations for monsters and weapons, as well as a Black Gloves addon. Additionally, in September 2023, a version of the mod containing only the weapon enhancements was posted in the release thread by Robo_Cola.[2]
