The Spider Mastermind is queen of the hill on E3M8: Dis

The Spider Mastermind, also called the Spiderdemon, is the boss of Episode III of Doom ("Inferno") and Episode IV of Ultimate Doom ("Thy Flesh Consumed"). It has 3000 hit points and is one of the toughest creatures in the game. It is female. The Spiderdemon appears as a huge brain with facial features on it, mounted atop a cybernetic pod with four legs and a chaingun, making it similar to a spider.

The Doom II game booklet says:

The Spider Mastermind: You guess the Arachnotrons had to come from somewhere. Hi, mom. She doesn't have a plasma gun, so thank heaven for small favors. Instead, she has a super-chaingun. Crap.

The Spider Mastermind is not mentioned in the Doom game booklet, presumably to avoid a spoiler. Perhaps as a result of this, the game booklet for the Depths of Doom Trilogy erroneously states that she appears in Doom II only.

Combat characteristics

The Spider Mastermind is armed with a rotary gun that has the sound of the shotgun but with a spread similar to the player's chaingun; in fact, it is essentially an automatic version of the Sergeant's shotgun, firing three pellets per shot at a rate of 425 shots per minute, her chaingun is also much bigger than the player's chaingun. When a Spider Mastermind begins firing, she will not stop until her target moves out of her view or dies; or if she is stunned (causing her to move) or killed. Similar behavior can be observed with the Chaingunner and Arachnotron.

Cyberdemons and Spider Masterminds take only direct hit damage, and are immune to all blast damage. Therefore, a greater number of rockets is required to kill these bosses than might be expected.

Tactical analysis

When fighting a Spider Mastermind, it is essential to keep one's distance as much as possible; even at medium range, the Spider Mastermind's attack can be devastating. Plasma rifle is the recommended weapon. Because the Mastermind has a low pain chance, rapid-fire weapons will not completely prevent it from attacking. Using melee attacks against it is extremely dangerous. In E3M8: Dis, it is possible to stand up on the ledge above ground level and stay at great distance from the Spider Mastermind. At this range, the Mastermind's attack will not aim toward the player, and therefore never hit him. Also, the Spider Mastermind is large and tall enough that, even while standing on the ledge, projectile attacks will reach the Mastermind.

Notes

  • Upon death the Spider Mastermind collapses into a heap, with an accompanying series of explosions. Her mouth, complete with pointed teeth still intact, is visible on her otherwise ruined corpse.
  • The Spider Mastermind is the only creature given a definite gender, referred to as "she" in the Doom II manual; however, in the ending text for Episode 3, she is not given a gender ("The loathsome spiderdemon that masterminded the invasion of the moon bases and caused so much death has had its ass kicked for all time.")
  • Near the beginning of Doom II MAP20, Gotcha!, the player is required to lure the Mastermind and Cyberdemon into fighting each other via monster infighting. Unless a third party intervenes, the Cyberdemon almost inevitably wins. It is recommended to allow the Cyberdemon to win since, while its attack does more potential damage, it's easier to dodge.
  • The Spider Mastermind's alertsound (DSSPISIT) sounds distinctly like 'Who is it?' or 'Where were you?' - perhaps wondering who is it coming to foil her plans?
  • The term "spider" is actually incorrect, as the Spider Mastermind only has six limbs total- two arms, four mechanical legs (though there may be two controlling the Chaingun). The name "Insectoid Mastermind" may have been more correct. The Doom novels seem to try to rectify this by mentioning them having six mechanical legs instead of four (although this is inconsistent, as the novels mention only four legs at one point).
