Version differences[edit]

Does anyone happen to have both versions to know if the 600 and 666 level Demon Gate discs had demonstrably different contents, or if the 666 one was just a re-labeling of the same thing? -- ETTiNGRiNDER (talk) 20:24, 29 September 2016 (CDT)

I'm not aware of a comprehensive listing of the contents of the different versions. Wad Archive only seems to list one of them, while not even stating which. I do own a personal copy of the 666 CD though, so if somebody has the 600 one and wants to compare, we could piece it together. --Quasar (talk) 00:54, 30 September 2016 (CDT)
To follow up on this, I did recently get my hands on the 600 version (DOS, not Mac, although the Mac version of Demon Gate also says 600 on it, it seems) to compare against the 666 one that I already had. The choice of WADs doesn't appear to differ greatly, but it appears that there are version differences between some of the files, though it would take some deeper investigation than I've yet done to figure out exactly what. At a glance, my guess is that, since most of the differences lie in the directory for Doom 2 WADs, the conversions of WADs for original Doom into Doom 2 may have been redone with different results, possibly due to the way conversion utilities tended to randomize certain elements during the conversion, although that's speculation for now. DMGATE.EXE also differs in checksum between the two (the one on the 666 disc has a more recent time stamp, which seems to confirm my assumption that the 666 CDs are the reprinted version.) The CD labels themselves look very similar (neither states the supposed number of levels) but the 666 disc has the addition of the text "MAC USERS: Double click on the desired level" underneath the instructions for DOS use. I'll update when I get a chance to look into the file differences more thoroughly. -- ETTiNGRiNDER (talk) 14:18, 27 September 2017 (CDT)
