Do not fill this in! == Changes to how-to links on Entryway == How to download and run Doom is IMHO still fatally incomplete because it omits OS X, one of three systems on that list with a broad userbase. I was planning to fix it myself, but haven't yet found a computer to borrow. This tutorial is a great idea in theory, but omits a lot of step-by-step installation details, doesn't pick a specific port as an example (which IMHO will confuse non-hardcore gamers), and is of course no more NPOV than the rest of Doomworld. How to play Doom on Windows XP contains three basic types of content: * Generic advice about running DOS on Win2K machines, which is already treated with intimidating thoroughness by existing retrogaming sites, e.g. HOTU. * Vanilla-specific tuning tips, which are relevant only for speedrunners and therefore should be part of a speedrunning tutorial, not a newbie tutorial. * The "quick start" thing (newly added) at the very end, which should be a subset of any newbie guide, not the entire thing. Nothing of a technical nature is extraordinary about this situation: it is simply one more instance of an obsolete environment (DOS in this case). Presumably, when writing about SNES Doom, we will not include instructions on how to connect an SNES to an HDTV. Therefore, I believe that How to download and run Doom should be linked on the main page, and How to play Doom on Windows XP should be merged and deleted. I have tried to avoid this discussion until the former article is ready for prime time, but I don't want to revert the anon editors either because I am hardly a neutral observer (in case that isn't really obvious from the tone of this post). So, what should be done? Ryan W 23:55, 19 February 2008 (UTC) :Even though How to download and run Doom doesn't deal with OS X, I'd still say it's good enough for "prime time", since it basically includes all the information included in How to play Doom on Windows XP and more. And hey, just the XP specific article alone has been in the limelight for quite some time, so why not one that has a Linux guide as well. Hell, various "how to download and run game X"-guides on the net do not include any other operating systems related info apart from Windows stuff (I'm naturally talking about games released on other operating systems as well here). And yeah, I agree that the article should be merged with How to play Doom on Windows XP. :And IMO the vanilla Doom running guide should be kept in How to download and run Doom. This is because there will always be purists (even among newbies), who want to strictly play the original game and not just something resembling it. Plus, even total Doom newbies may be interested in speedrunning (people may even pick up the game just to speedrun it), which is another reason why I think we should keep the vanilla running guide in these newbie guides, and not as a separate speedrunning tutorial. -- Janizdreg 03:44, 21 February 2008 (UTC) :: who want to strictly play the original game and not just something resembling it Yeah, that's another issue I have with the new section: ZDoom includes many wonderful features, but vanilla-like physics isn't one of them. God help us if Freedoom ever gets finished.
