Does anyone know the real source for the name "cacodemon"? We have two suggestions now.

Also, what other references are there? I have vague memories of something about the teleport flat symbols being taken from some Necronomicon illustrations, but I may be wrong about that. Fredrik 18:51, 12 Mar 2005 (GMT)

Indeed Fredrik, and actually, the word cacodemon is in any good English dictionary and is a more precise term for what is popularly known as a "demon". Demon means "spirit" or "godling" in Greek, and thus cacodemon is just "evil spirit". So I'd say there's no need to find a source for the name unless the source appears explicitly mentioned or pointed out by an authoritative party (like Petersen or Romero saying "oh yeah, we called it cacodemon because...").
I added two references to Lovecraft which seem rather indisputable given the circumstances and evidence, and removed the Lovecraft in Quake link firstly because it's not necessary and secondly (and more importantly) because it's dead. Who is like God? 10:24, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
