: No matter what the answer to the above, vertical auto-aiming should certainly be discussed here someday.  I'm not sure whether vertical ''scatter'' belongs here or in the article about the SSG (correct me if I'm wrong, but don't p_pspr.c and p_enemy.c suggest that it's relevant only in that case?).    [[User:Ryan W|Ryan W]] 14:34, 2 June 2007 (UTC)

IMO a comprehensive article about autoaim in general would a very nice addition to this wiki. Too bad I don't know enough about autoaim to write one myself. -- [[User:Janizdreg|Janizdreg]] 15:12, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

What determines the "range" of a bullet attack? I always thought that they could travel an unlimited distance. Draconio 03:21, 9 May 2005 (UTC)

In the Doom engine, hitscan attacks are limited to 2048 units. I know ZDoom removes this limit, but I don't know about other ports. It might be an arbitrary limitation, or it might be a creative decision. Bloodshedder 03:50, 9 May 2005 (UTC)

This may be a stupid question, but if the range is really 2048 units, then it should be possible to kill the sniping sergeant on MAP15 of WADFATHR.WAD from Maximum Doom.  Try as I might, however, I cannot hit him.  Does the vertical auto-aiming stop working after 1024 units, or what?    Ryan W 23:20, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

No matter what the answer to the above, vertical auto-aiming should certainly be discussed here someday.  I'm not sure whether vertical scatter belongs here or in the article about the SSG (correct me if I'm wrong, but don't p_pspr.c and p_enemy.c suggest that it's relevant only in that case?).    Ryan W 14:34, 2 June 2007 (UTC)
Addendum: according to a Doomworld forum thread, monsters have a different autoaim range than players.    Ryan W 22:08, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

Can't disagree there.  I know enough C to look at the source and guess that all the details must be there, but not enough to actually identify and explicate them.    Ryan W 05:44, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

Roundoff error?[edit]

Graf Zahl has made the following interesting remark: "[H]itscan attacks have a limited range of 2048 map units. It can be increased but the math tends to become erratic when this is done. I have seen the weirdest effects after increasing the range." [1]    Ryan W 18:47, 26 January 2008 (UTC)
