If Vanilla Doom redirects to Doom engine#Fan community variants, why shouldn't this do the same?  That section at least explains what the term "vanilla" has to do with the Doom community, which isn't true of the wikipedia article (and it looks really ugly anyway, since hard external redirects don't work).    Ryan W 21:04, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

Vanilla alone can be used for a wide range of contexts (still applicable to DOOM stuff), such as "vanilla Doom 64", "vanilla ZDoom", "any vanilla implementation" or "vanilla software". If one wants to refer specifically to the use given (especially) in Doomworld to the plain engine or its specs, one just uses the phrase "vanilla Doom", although I think it shouldn't be used much. In most contexts where it's used it can be replaced with something less systematic, more objective, and more concise.
When I edited the redirect it was being used, if I recall correctly, in two instances. One used it in a way that fit the Wikipedia article pretty well, the other, loosely as if it were "vanilla Doom" (butchering an already informal usage). Who is like God? 22:07, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
On second thoughts, deleting vanilla would not be a bad idea; or we could make a disambiguation page pointing to Doom engine#Fan community variants and Wikipedia:Vanilla software. Who is like God? 22:15, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
