Map parameter[edit]

Just saw: "maybe the map parameter handling can be improved?"  Do you recall how?  IMO imitating kraflab's format is prudent, because occasionally it takes a value other than a slot, e.g. Episode+2+ILs.  Also, a user not skilled with markup might simply copypaste it and expect it to work.

The following are possible, but might be total overkill:

  • Detect  MAP##  values and insert plus signs
  • "Compress" the description text into fewer invocations
  • If no map parameter is given, try to infer it from the article title

What do others think?  Ryan W (living fossil) 17:58, 20 November 2020 (CST)

Not sure what you mean with "recall" - it was an open question because I'm not a templating expert.
But it is not worth the effort to make this parameter smarter: there were 10 WAD overview pages on the old DSDA site that showed only MAP01 (Doom 1 & II, TNT & Plutonia, Alien Vendetta, Hell Revealed 1, Memento Mori 1 & 2, Requiem, Scythe 1) but on the new site four (AV, MM1&2, Req) show all maps now. I merely kept the map parameter there for consistent use of old->new templates and consistency with the Compet-n template on the same map pages.
And as you observed, the map parameter on the new site can take many forms, which the API also needs. So creating alternate syntaxes in the template is more likely to increase confusion rather than help much in its usage. --Xymph (talk) 04:59, 21 November 2020 (CST)
It's always nice when my inaction helps a task.  :>  Completely agreed that functionality relating mostly (or solely) to this migration needn't be optimized.
Andy's site dates from a time when some browsers truncated HTML at 32K.  So there may have been "market" reasons not to show an entire table, in addition to what the huge DWF thread stated.
I may have general questions about mass edits, but they belong in the more general threads.  Thanks for making time to implement so soon!    Ryan W (living fossil) 02:28, 23 November 2020 (CST)
Actually, to me it feels like I've been in denial too long about needing to switch templates in all articles, partly because I hoped for a redirect system which never materialized, and an API which is backburnered.
Oh well. As predicted the (mostly) botwise updates took many hours across the past two weeks, but it's done now. Phew. :)
