Revision as of 23:23, 24 November 2005

The Unidoom DM series is a series of deathmatch WADs created by Clan Unidoom from 2002 to 2004. They are regularly played in ZDaemon's deathmatch tournaments and Skulltag's Friday Night Fragfest, and are a source of inspiration for deathmatch mappers in both the ZDaemon and Skulltag communities.

UDM1 was released on January 1st, 2002 at 12:17am into the /idgames archive. Containing sixteen deathmatch maps, two deathtag (albeit buggy) maps and two parody maps, it became an instant hit in the Deathmatch community. Notable DM mappers such as TLSDM's ChronoHunter have stated UDM1 as their inspiration to map.

Controversy

Two issues have been raised about UDM1: The use of Skulltag textures without the permission of Carnevil and the plagarism of MAP06, although the latter was not known until deathz0r revealed the truth about it years later.

UDM2 development had started shortly after the release of UDM1, but lack of motivation slowed progress on UDM2 down to a near-halt throughout 2002. UDM2 was eventually released on March 2nd, 2003 and uploaded onto various servers (but initially rejected from /idgames, see Controversy). Contains twelve deathmatch maps, a parody map and a credits map.

The standout map from UDM2 is the tribute map to Super Mario Bros 3, which uses sprites and textures from that game.

Controversy

Like UDM1, UDM2 had used Skulltag textures without the permission of Carnevil. In response to UDM2 being uploaded to /idgames, Carnevil had sent an email to Ty Haldermann requesting it to be removed from the server. This action had caused a flamewar in the Skulltag IRC channel, in which Carnevil eventually agreed to allow Clan Unidoom to reupload UDM2.

UDM3

UDM3 MAP07, by Doomraider and AlexMax
The second sequel to UDM1 was released on December 25th, 2005 and uploaded to the /idgames archive. Unlike UDM1 and UDM2, a much broader variety of mappers had contributed to this mappack. Also unlike the earlier WADs, UDM3 did not contain Skulltag textures, allowing for a smaller filesize. UDM3 contains sixteen deathmatch maps, two parody maps and a credits map, it also introduced a new palette which modified the green and blue colours to provide a brighter environment.

The standout map from UDM3 is 'Citadel of Unidoom', which was an attempt by deathz0r to get as many Unidoom members involved in making a city that had their own buildings. Although the layout was not completed due to lack of time, it was still a highly playable Free-For-All map.

UDMX

The successor to UDM3 is currently in progress. It is planned to be released in 2005, and will contain at least 12 deathmatch maps.
