Is there a standard way to write author names in references? It seems "Lastname, Firstname" is more common, but I've seen "Firstname Lastname" too. See Timeline#References where I reformatted a few before asking, and Idgames_archive#References which made me ask as yet. And what if there are two authors? Perhaps this can be described in a help page or the FAQ. --Xymph (talk) 12:44, 30 January 2016 (CST)

: We've been slowly standardizing on "Last, First". As with pretty much everything, it's a perpetual work in progress and occasionally gets reverted by accident ;) For multiple authors, the MLA guidelines apply, which are to list them in the order they are listed on the work with "Last, First, First Last, ... and First Last". Some examples:

:: Rhinewald, Shane and Kim Della Porta

:: Mendoza, Jonathan, Christen David Klie, and Robert Kiana Carter

:I don't believe this has been enshrined in the FAQ or guidelines yet beyond the vague wording that citations should follow an established format such as MLA or APA when practical.

I came across a few pages with pending edits from several days ago. The Recent Changes page (when expanded back to mid-January) also shows at least half a dozen unchecked pages. : Unchecked pages are ones that no one has felt confident to review yet. Pending ones may have slipped through, or, we were waiting for somebody who might be able to verify them and such a person has never showed up. Marking a revision as "approved" is basically our stamp that we think it has at least a modicum of accuracy and completeness, and adheres to most if not all editing guidelines. Sometimes it's a matter of not having had enough time to get around to them also. --Quasar (talk) 09:31, 1 February 2016 (CST)

Hello, I have recently gained information about the id Anthology I would like to add. I've been focusing on the 110 relevant images from addoncollector.spielepedia.de which has recently disappeared off the net to get started, but it's possible that better images of some of the ones it had exist, and I also neglected to check the Internet Archive's collection which has a few too. There are a couple already on the wiki but these need to be rewritten in our own words ASAP. Hello. I'm new here. I'm not really a Doom person but I've gone out of my way almost two weeks ago to update the Plus page (which IMO, is a bit inaccurate of a name) concerning info on the elusive WebTV port of Doom and the frankly shoddy preservation efforts by the people in WebTV's hacking scene that followed 23 years after it was discovered to spread awareness about how endangered the original port is, along with just WebTV information in general. I've waited a week now but my changes are still pending. Since you've contributed to the page prior I figured you might be a little more interested in checking out the changes and hopefully giving them the greenlight. Thanks in advance.

I've read the policies on capitalization for the site and I don't really agree with them, for example the link under monsters/enemies:
+
By the way, wonder what's up with the email system here. Has it stopped working recently or is it just me as I can't even get a confirmation email sent to my inbox. WTV-411 (talk) 06:59, 7 June 2021 (CDT)
"Hell knight" honestly looks like it could be improved by capitalizing the first letter of the second word.

Same goes for "Quad damage".

I've looked online for capitalization standards but am unable to find a reputable one.
+
: This is now done. I had concerns about the removal of some of the previous source links, which I have restored w/archived links as the sites have gone down since I wrote the original article. I also removed a mega.nz link as we cannot link to any kind of unauthorized files obtained through hacking or reverse engineering of commercial products here. The other changes were more minor picky stuff for flow and grammar.

I'd like to know if this can be changed? For aesthetic purposes.
+
: You may not receive email at all if you are using a Google service, as they block our server for not implementing a Google-specific form of anti-spam response which the software on our server doesn't support. We've also had off-and-on problems with Microsoft blocking us, though I have recently been receiving things at my hotmail address. If you're using a different service, let me know. --Quasar (talk) 23:52, 7 June 2021 (CDT)

: You would have to bring that up on Doom Wiki:Central Processing, but I'm pretty certain that it won't achieve consensus, as we spent the last ~7 years slowly converting to a literary convention where only proper nouns are capitalized, so that this site is more like an encyclopedic work than a game's instruction booklet. Games frequently follow an Every Word Capped for Nouns convention; even the original Doom instruction manual did this, which is why, back in 2005, this site started out doing the same. But then we realized that when you're reading an article and you run into this:
+
:: I'm fine with the MEGA link being removed if it's against the rules. Appears I didn't read too much into that. 😅 Also the only source link I really had actual issue with before my changes was the random link to a WebTV hacker's site that was thrown in as tacky advertising, which judging from the IP of the editor (since it's close to an IP of a home server a WebTV hacker manages) is possibly the owner of said site. That's just me though. Anyway, I'm still liking the end result and maybe this'll encourage some people lurking in the shadows to at least make more commotion about the abysmal state of WebTV-related preservation. I can only dream though.

:: The Super Shotgun is a stronger form of the Shotgun distinguished by having two barrels. It uses the same Ammo and is good to use against Zombiemen.

In light of previous conversation, I should note the extension is beginning therapy with a developer who knows what they're doing. Of course a product manager could reshuffle priorities tomorrow, but if this code ever reaches production, it will be backward-compatible (to prevent German Wikipedia from forking) so we won't be starting from scratch.

: It is particularly illustrative if, we dispense for a moment with the game-specific nature of the text and imagine instead writing this, on a site like Wikipedia:

: Only in languages like German is capitalization of all nouns considered proper grammar. Hope this helps with why we made the change-over. +
Rata asquerosa

: If a conflict happens when trying to upload a new image, the wiki software will prevent the upload (you have to go through a special "upload new version" method to actually overwrite an image). In general it's not required, I've just been doing it so that the names are more descriptive (because for example Imp.jpg could be from anything, while Doom16Imp.jpg is very obvious). I saw your note on Taw Tulki's talk page about warnings being ignored and decided to bring my response here rather than clog their page up.

Hey Quasar: I've placed average damage values for enemy attacks. So an attack that does 22,23,22,23,22 ... is stated as "22.5". In fact most of the values seem to be fractional. Is it better to round each value up?
+
I can think of two possible options:
+
# Apply an Wikipedia:Editnotice to contentious pages that carries a similar warning as ConsensusContentionMsg. Anyone trying to edit such pages would then see the notice at the top of the page - the problem is that if they ignore the big red box at the top of the article, they'll probably ignore the big red box on the edit page as well.
+
# Apply semi-protection to the affected articles to stop any editing by new/unregistered users. I don't favour this option personally as Pending Changes/FlaggedRevs already requires edits from those groups of people to be reviewed before the average viewer actually sees them, and all this would do is discourage potential editors.

: I think it's good for now. We still seem to be learning stuff about damage formulas in this game; maybe eventually we'll be able to look at the scripting and find actual formulas and the such, who knows. --Quasar (talk) 09:16, 1 June 2016 (CDT)

: You're forced to include the Lua piece regardless of the inner template used? That's rude. IIRC though, many templates worked just fine before Scribunto rolled out, including this one. We could try importing the historical snapshot if there's a clear use for it.

Warning, Monaco does not work well at all in MediaWiki 1.27
+
:: As far as Scribunto-backed templates go (aka Modules), you would be reimplementing everything in template markup, which means doing it from scratch. And unfortunately there have been a lot of renames and subsequent deletions on Wikipedia that have made it impossible to access the edit history of a lot of templates from before they installed Scribunto. --Quasar (talk) 19:18, 18 December 2021 (CST)

In the event you were planning on updating DoomWiki to 1.27, discovered Monaco has several PHP issues regarding certain classes in the skin and sidebar PHP files, effectively breaking it.

The conflicts appear to be related to how the classes in question use depreciated or removed methods in 1.27, but I'm not proficient enough to further look into the issue. Arcane (talk) 05:04, 29 June 2016 (CDT)

: I'll have to do my usual analysis and testing before I consider the upgrade; I already brought the git HEAD revision up to compatibility with 1.25, but obviously that's now out of date as well. We're getting woefully behind here because I am lacking support from the server owner currently. --Quasar (talk) 06:15, 29 June 2016 (CDT)

:: Good news then. If it will work for 1.25, it works fine on 1.26, so you aren't that far behind. My version is basically yours with some tweaks (excised most of the Wikia button look for stock skin compatibility for personal preference/just-in-case sanity checks, added the Vector button circular bullet points with square dots as fallback mode), so if want to, rip off anything I did as a base for any improvements. # Doom Wiki:RFC/Maptabs template, try "minor adjustment of 'dw-tabimg' padding to 0.4em". And "I presume that each skin has its own .css file (so far I saw only Common.css), so if the 'border-radius' property is moved out of class 'dw-tab' into the Monaco skin .css (and perhaps other skin(s) where rounded corners don't look out of place) but not the MonoBook skin; then the corners will remain rectangular in that skin."

# Doom Wiki:Central Processing#Navbox template font size?, "the templates would have to be changed to use a CSS class. We'd then define that class to apply font-size: smaller in Common.css, while leaving it normal in Mobile.css - this allows the two to present differently depending on the view being used."

QueryBot itself is just an account; the logic that drives any action it takes is written for a custom JavaScript embedding I've created called vibconsole, which has a MediaWiki REST API library which I also wrote from scratch. It uses the login API to acquire the QueryBot account's credentials, and then performs whatever processing I've programmed it to do for that task; there's no form of AI or automation. In other words I need to be very careful when doing things like map article edits that whatever regular expressions or other pattern matching logic I write doesn't hit false positives. There is also a major roadblock that may apply to some articles in that MediaWiki requires a multi-part POST operation if the article size exceeds the standard POST limit. I've never had to deal with that case yet and haven't written any code for it, accordingly. The earlier task I did (recategorizing several hundred images) had no risk of running into that limit because image articles are so small. --Quasar (talk) 11:01, 17 August 2016 (CDT)

:::: Thanks for the info. I previously wrote that I intend to replace/add to stock map articles using DMMPST output, but those alone (including Master Levels) already total around 290 pages, and then there are all the megawad series and other map pages. That number of manual updates is very tedious, something I'm not looking forward to at all, and so a development effort to perform this via your tools may still be worthwhile. Also, if ever a decision is made to alter the Statistics sections and DMMPST supports that, then re-running the edit scripts would allow to apply such changes rather painlessly.

:::: I'm not sure what the standard POST limit is here, but Statistics sections for big maps (and for Hexen with its five Things tables) can go up to 9+ KB, so that is most likely too much and multipart POSTing will indeed be needed. I do have a little experience with that though.

:::: Is your tooling able to do section edits like we do via the website? Then just replacing existing Statistics sections with newly generated content would bypass the need for complex regexs.

:::: In short, I would certainly like to investigate feasibility of this approach further, before dismissing it and diving into a very tiring and time-consuming manual process. Can we discuss this further outside the wiki, e.g. via email? --Xymph (talk) 05:03, 19 August 2016 (CDT)

::::: It turns out that the predicted 8KB limit doesn't really exist. :) Last night I successfully tested section updates via regular x-www-form-urlencoded POSTs (the Wikimate framework) up to 32KB. I quit there as I don't really care to know what the real limit is. Just a little data point. --Xymph (talk) 06:39, 5 October 2016 (CDT)

:::::: Upon reading that again it seems like the multipart MIME just achieves a more efficient transfer for large data and is not a strict technical requirement, so this makes sense now. --Quasar (talk) 09:42, 5 October 2016 (CDT)

it's literally 4 lines to add — That's not the effort I mean. You have stated innumerable times that MediaWiki and our server configuration are both ridiculously brittle. Any PHP change risks prolonged downtime, data loss, and/or generally running the staff into the ground. Therefore, during the 2014 upgrade, we agreed that I would not make proposals involving extensions or config variables, until staff had resolved the stability concerns at every layer.

Has there been major improvement? The recent #doomwiki discussions about the server certainly sounded (from the outside) that all was not yet well. Ryan W (living fossil) 16:58, 7 May 2019 (CDT)

: I honestly do not recall using that terminology. MediaWiki uses a lot of memory and processing power and those have been the sources of virtually all of the problems that we've had. php development on a live server is difficult because you can't really debug things in advance, and that's why it's much better done on a development instance dedicated to the purpose, rather than to a live website. But that simply doesn't factor in at all in the current situation - the settings I'm talking about are simple assignments to four elements of an array that is already defined by the FlaggedRevs extension. It's utterly mundane and routine. This is nowhere in the same universe as an upgrade process or installing a major extension blind.

: The ongoing discussions have been about setting up an automated backup system and that because of DreamCloud's occasional decision to upgrade their storage infrastructure or to reboot the server w/o warning, which causes operating system level issues. That work is already complete and is functioning optimally. --Quasar (talk) 20:02, 7 May 2019 (CDT)

:: I was definitely not trying to match anyone's exact wording from 2014 (not sure I even have all the logs anymore). If I misunderstood the change process at that time, I apologize.

:: That said, please be aware that my intent was to avoid wasting everyone's time — mostly the maintainers' in testing, as you note, but also other power users' in distilling and posting opinions, which apparently is a limited resource also. If this sort of analysis must occur each time, possibly reversing precedents along the way, then I won't bother, and presumably should develop thicker skin about being overruled on "big picture" grounds. FWIW. Ryan W (living fossil) 11:05, 19 May 2019 (CDT)

Hi again. When you get a chance, would you mind looking at this and see if you recall what your methodology was? The text looked completely fine at face value. I maybe could narrow down the issue if I spent a couple days with it :P but am about to leave town myself. Thanks, and sorry if this topic should have been raised well in advance. Ryan W (living fossil) 08:20, 26 July 2019 (CDT)

: Recommend use of regexpal.com when this happens. You can put in the regular expression, and then edit the new lines added by the user that hit a false positive by removing text until it no longer matches the regex (no areas are highlighted on the page). At that point, unless you're a regex power user, you can probably only advise on how to change the text in question. But feel free to experiment of course - regexpal lets you test the changes in real time. --Quasar (talk) 01:42, 30 July 2019 (CDT)

:: Oh wow, that's great. In hindsight I should have guessed there were GUI tools for non-mavens (Wikipedia recommends regex101.com). Shame the extension only allows testing on tiny samples ; in practice, barring an emergency, I would probably set a tag and let it chug for a while until I was confident about false positives. Thanks for the fast fix and the pointer. Ryan W (living fossil) 22:27, 14 August 2019 (CDT)

Category:Console Doom errors and bugs
Hey, I noticed you generated a long-waited collection of console-specific bugs articles. How 'bout making an unusual error (found in PSX and GBA, etc.) where you cannot obtain all items (ammunition, health) per same coord point. Would be glad to exactly know the title of it before bringing it to existance here. :)

: I'm not aware of any existing clever names for that one among the community unfortunately. Tradition would have it be named as the phenomenon itself (if you check out vanilla Doom bug articles, like "Lost soul clipping problems", or "Things respawn outside the map"), but for this one I think maybe that would be too verbose. "Items cannot be collected when overlapping with other unneeded items" is pretty long for an article title x_x --Quasar (talk) 04:44, 31 August 2019 (CDT)

A small thank you.
Hi there Quasar,

Thanks for allowing me to edit certain Wiki pages.

But first and formost id like to give a small thanks for checking my edits and spotting the ever so delightful little screw ups along the way (Talking about JDP and Caverns here).

It is some time to go before the Editor achievement is reached, but till then, i am glad and thankful for your corrections. Ill try to do even better as i go along. Because there is a lot still left that needs processing.

Have a nice weekend Quasar,

Red.

Doom 64 maps page layout

I just realized that for some reason the layout of pages about Doom 64 maps are different than what other map pages use. Shall I change it to match it more like the others? --ZeroTheEro (talk) 06:27, 2 April 2020 (CDT)

Wouldn't hurt. --Quasar (talk) 07:37, 2 April 2020 (CDT)

id Anthology info

Hello, I have recently gained information about the id Anthology I would like to add. I reached out to John Romero to verify the number of units created, and he confirmed the number of 10,000 was correct. How can I properly cite this, as it was in a direct email correspondence? If you have an email address I can forward it to you. --73.122.219.81 12:21, 31 July 2020 (CDT)

If you'd like to forward it, as I'm interested in having it for historical purposes, you can send it to haleyjd AT hotmail dot com (using the @ and . as normal). In the meantime it's OK to add it to the article anyways - sometimes we run into things like this that can't be directly cited but are known to come from reliable sources. --Quasar (talk) 00:25, 2 August 2020 (CDT)

Weapon categories

Sorty, but for what exact reason you are adding the "double-barreled shotguns" category is the is no other double-barreled shotguns besides the Super Shotguns which have their own disambiguation part in their own pages? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.51.168.64 (talk)

Doom RPG

I was reading your recent updates to Doom RPG article and began to wonder, if you have a copy of High-end BREW version of this game by chance? --Yetanotherhope

I have a friend who does. He's currently working on extracting the data from it. --Quasar (talk) 15:36, 24 January 2021 (CST)
Perhaps, a friend of yours is currently working on Doom RPG reverse engineering project? --Yetanotherhope 02:01, 25 January 2021 (CST)
Yep 😊 --Quasar (talk) 00:02, 26 January 2021 (CST)
Cool! Can't wait to see what secrets this version of game is holding. 😊 --Yetanotherhope 03:12, 27 January 2021 (CST)

Looking to have revisions checked

Hello. I'm new here. I'm not really a Doom person but I've gone out of my way almost two weeks ago to update the WebTV Plus page (which IMO, is a bit inaccurate of a name) concerning info on the elusive WebTV port of Doom and the frankly shoddy preservation efforts by the people in WebTV's hacking scene that followed 23 years after it was discovered to spread awareness about how endangered the original port is, along with just WebTV information in general. I've waited a week now but my changes are still pending. Since you've contributed to the page prior I figured you might be a little more interested in checking out the changes and hopefully giving them the greenlight. Thanks in advance.

By the way, wonder what's up with the email system here. Has it stopped working recently or is it just me as I can't even get a confirmation email sent to my inbox. WTV-411 (talk) 06:59, 7 June 2021 (CDT)

This is now done.
You may not receive email at all if you are using a Google service, as they block our server for not implementing a Google-specific form of anti-spam response which the software on our server doesn't support. We've also had off-and-on problems with Microsoft blocking us, though I have recently been receiving things at my hotmail address. If you're using a different service, let me know. --Quasar (talk) 23:52, 7 June 2021 (CDT)
I'm fine with the MEGA link being removed if it's against the rules.
Also had a feeling it had to do with Gmail not liking the mail servers (which is the email I used for this site). Guess I'll just use Protonmail or something. --WTV-411 (talk) 08:07, 8 June 2021 (CDT)

Brief, incoherent FlaggedRevs followup

In light of previous conversation, I should note the extension is beginning therapy [1] with a developer who knows what they're doing. Of course a product manager could reshuffle priorities tomorrow, but if this code ever reaches production, it will be backward-compatible (to prevent German Wikipedia from forking) so we won't be starting from scratch.

I was never attached to the tier system although other contributors clearly like it, and I might even post a rant to represent the overall self-hosting POV (to which you need not respond :>

Tangent: the shell team likely has bigger fish to fry during the upgrade process itself, e.g. irreversible metadata migration [2]. FWIW / KUTGW. Ryan W (living fossil) 01:01, 8 June 2021 (CDT)

100,000 Levels Title header upload problem

I'm currently having problems uploading my image of 100,000 Levels onto this wiki despite the file size not going above 2.44 MBs. The resolution is 1920x1080 and wondering what the problem could be? Justice ∞ (talk) 01:15, 29 August 2021 (CDT)

If there's somewhere else you can toss it (such as an image hosting site for example) I could try it here. Otherwise it's difficult for me to debug. --Quasar (talk) 19:04, 29 August 2021 (CDT)
Here you go https://imgur.com/gallery/1mY1QW3. I had to downsize my image to a lower resolution in order for me to be able to upload on here. Everytime I tried uploading the image, it would fail and refresh back to the upload page. Justice ∞ (talk) 00:40, 31 August 2021 (CDT)

Edit notices

I saw your note on Taw Tulki's talk page about warnings being ignored and decided to bring my response here rather than clog their page up.

I can think of two possible options:

  1. Apply an edit notice to contentious pages that carries a similar warning as ConsensusContentionMsg. Anyone trying to edit such pages would then see the notice at the top of the page - the problem is that if they ignore the big red box at the top of the article, they'll probably ignore the big red box on the edit page as well.
  2. Apply semi-protection to the affected articles to stop any editing by new/unregistered users. I don't favour this option personally as Pending Changes/FlaggedRevs already requires edits from those groups of people to be reviewed before the average viewer actually sees them, and all this would do is discourage potential editors.

On the other hand, it doesn't matter what you do - some people will always find ways to not do what you tell them. Gauss (talk) 13:18, 9 November 2021 (CST)

Unfortunately option 1 uses a "fmbox" template which is an #invoke, meaning it is implemented using Wikipedia's Scribunto plugin, which we don't support here because I think it's crazy to write web frontend code in Lua. --Quasar (talk) 17:49, 25 November 2021 (CST)
You're forced to include the Lua piece regardless of the inner template used? That's rude. IIRC though, many templates worked just fine before Scribunto rolled out, including this one. We could try importing the historical snapshot if there's a clear use for it.
FWIW, Gauss, it's supposed to be relatively easy to post a custom boxed message with the standardized templates Quasar implemented (stupid example). However, for registered users, a talk page message is safer because MediaWiki has longstanding issues with templates/banners not displaying on mobile. (It affects Wikipedia much more often because of the huge amount of custom JS/CSS, but I remember hitting it here occasionally.) HTH. Ryan W (living fossil) 09:45, 18 December 2021 (CST)
As far as Scribunto-backed templates go (aka Modules), you would be reimplementing everything in template markup, which means doing it from scratch. And unfortunately there have been a lot of renames and subsequent deletions on Wikipedia that have made it impossible to access the edit history of a lot of templates from before they installed Scribunto. --Quasar (talk) 19:18, 18 December 2021 (CST)
