The vulgar is a monster encountered in Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil. It resembles an imp although there are some bodily differences. Vulgars have only two eyes that have an orange glow. They are slightly shorter and have a monkey-like frame as opposed to that of a human. Due to this, they move on all four legs but will sometimes stand up on their hind legs when angered. Unlike the imp, they sport a long tail, their bellies have small insect-like limbs attached to them, and their lower jaw is designed like an insect's mandibles. Unlike all other monsters, a vulgar's spawning cloud is cyan rather than orange.

Notably, as the imp was the most prevalent demon in the original game, the vulgar is easily the most present demon with the most appearances throughout the expansion.

Combat characteristics

The vulgar also differs from the imp in that it attacks with plasma balls instead of fireballs. This plasma ball attack is comparable to the Hell knight's projectile, though it is significantly weaker—even weaker than the imp's fireball—though vulgars take much less time to aim their plasma balls before throwing them, which makes avoiding them via strafing much more difficult. Their other attacks consist of leaps and claw slashing. They have a mechanical-like growl that they emit in each attack and are capable of crawling on walls and other surfaces.

The vulgar throws its plasma balls in a lower arc than the imp's fireballs; as a result, they travel in a straighter line and are easier to grab with the grabber. Firing their own plasma balls back at them with the grabber is probably the best way to defeat vulgars, as a single direct hit should kill a vulgar instantly.

Development

The model used for the vulgar was originally planned to appear in Doom 3, as the arch-vile. A picture of it appeared in the December 2002 issue of PC Gamer magazine. Differences in the model from its appearance as the vulgar included use of an upright walking pose, and orange glowing eyes.

Triva

  • The vulgar appears in every level of Resurrection of Evil, excluding the first level.
  • The appearance of the vulgar resembles species 8472 from Star Trek: Voyager, and the Xenomorph species from the Alien series.

Appearance statistics

The vulgars largely replace imps as the regular enemy, and are the most common enemy in Resurrection of Evil, appearing in all levels, bar the first one.

Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil

The enemy count on Nightmare is the same as on Veteran.

The Lost Mission

Vulgars do not appear in The Lost Mission.
