2022 A Doom Odyssey is a 2022 megawad for The Ultimate Doom, created for Boom/MBF-compatible source ports with UMAPINFO support. It is intended as sequel to 2002 A Doom Odyssey, which was made twenty years before, and contains a total of five new episodes, each consisting of 10 maps. The project was organized by Paul Corfiatis (pcorf) and the 2022ADO team over the span of five years of development. Public beta testing was started on Doomworld forums on September 14, 2022. After fixing all loose ends the WAD was uploaded to the idgames archive on October 31, 2022.[1]

2022 A Doom Odyssey was selected as one of the runners-up at the 2022 Cacowards.

Trivia[edit]

  • E2M1 and E4M5 were originally made for "2002 A Doom Odyssey" but ended up being rejected. After tuning up, they made their way into the sequel.[2]
  • Paul Corfiatis shared some information about the episodes and their inspiration:[3][4]
  • According to the PDF packaged with the WAD, the first completed level was E1M8 (August 20, 2017) and the last was E3M6 (October 18, 2022).
  • Many of episode 2's maps have Japanese titles; jigoku (じごく) translates to "hell".
  • All of the non-secret maps in episode 5 are named after demons from The Lesser Key of Solomon, and specifically the 1904 version edited by Aleister Crowley and Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers.
  • The name of episode 3, "Al Dante", is a combination of the Italian term al dente, describing something that has been cooked to be firm to bite, and the name of the Italian poet Dante Alighieri, who is most famous for his seminal Divine Comedy, whose first part, Inferno, tells of a journey through Hell.
