Disc containing Mac Doom source code and development resources.

In September 2023, a compact disc containing the source code to various versions of Doom, including Mac and DOS versions of Doom II and The Ultimate Doom, was auctioned on eBay by an anonymous seller.[1] The auction was won by an internet user who dumped the disc and anonymously uploaded it to the Internet Archive. The disc contains versions of the Doom source code dated February 15th, 1996, earlier than the one officially released by id Software in 1997, as well as many development assets that were not released by John Romero in the 2015 Doom source data release.

The CD is a backup disc labelled "Mac Doom/Doom II/Ultimate Doom Source". According to Mike Rubits (sponge), it matches the appearance of many similar discs which are owned by and housed at id Software, including the same handwriting on the label. This makes it likely to be the product of a direct leak. The disc is formatted for the classic Mac OS (versions 9 and below), and contains many Mac OS utilities. Despite its date, it does not seem to contain anything related to Final Doom, which was released only a few months later.

A similar disc was listed on eBay during December, 2023 and then again with a lower price in March, 2024, labelled "Hexen / Mac Doom". The disc was sold on March 10.[2][3]

Another, third disc was listed on eBay during October, 2024, labelled "Mac Hexen 1.1", dated 20 May 1996. The disc was sold on October 6.[4] A fourth disc, labelled "Mac Hexen 1.1" dated 25 May 1996 was sold on 5 January, 2025.[5]
