Linguica in early 2007

Andrew "Linguica" Stine is the cofounder and webmaster of Doomworld. Stine ran the site for several years before officially relinquishing his position in 2003, and then resumed activities in 2016. During these periods of time, he has been responsible for the majority of effort in running the site, including the design and back-end code. Despite his departure, he remained an influential figure in the Doom community into the late 2000s, continuing to contribute to Doomworld in an unofficial context.

His status as webmaster of one of the most influential Doom sites earned Stine a widespread reputation. He used his influence in October 1999 in convincing John Carmack to re-license the Doom source code under the GNU GPL.

Stine has also contributed to several important projects, including Gothic 99. He also wrote The Doomworld idgames database as a web interface to the idgames archive. In 2004 and 2005 he was a prominent writer on SomethingAwful.com.

Linguica held Hissy for two years, resulting in a tongue-in-cheek protest by a portion of the Doom community known as "Free Hissy." It earned him the nickname of "Hissy Hogger," which has since been applied to anyone who receives the plush cacodemon.

Other notes[edit]

Linguica has appeared in several Doom modifications, including Skulltag as a player skin, and MassMouth 2 as the sidekick to head villain John Romero. He also created the well-known protip meme.

He was interviewed by SFGate.com after the Columbine High School Massacre regarding correlations between video games and school violence.[1]
