This mod received an honorable mention at the 2022 Cacowards on Doomworld! |
Ante Mortem is a multi-episode PK3 for Doom II, requiring the GZDoom source port. It was created by Snaxalotl and first posted to the Doomworld forums on June 5, 2021, with the full release of the first episode following on May 25, 2022; a second episode is still in development, with only the first two maps finished so far. The PK3 incorporates the gameplay mod Supercharge by Tango and utilizes the OTEX texture pack by Ola Björling (ukiro). The maps consist of fairly large hellish techbases and caverns, with combat mostly made up of smaller encounters, but larger fights and even all-out slaughter also occur.
Ante Mortem Episode 1 received an honorable mention at the 2022 Cacowards.
Content[edit]
Custom content[edit]
All of the weapons and monsters (except for the last three entries in the list below) are provided through the integrated Supercharge mod, though with some parameters like health modified. As a result, all enemies and most weapons receive a reskin even if the stats themselves remain mostly unchanged in some cases (see Supercharge page for changes to weapons—both the stomper and scrap gun are unused). Apart from the more extensive changes to the monsters listed below, the arch-vile (renamed to Exile) and the baron of Hell now have 800 HP, the Hell knight has 400 HP, the pain elemental 240 HP, the imp 50 HP, the lost soul 50 HP, and the shotgun guy 25 HP.
Note also that as a result of Supercharge, damage for all attacks is no longer randomized but uses fixed values instead.
- Plasma zombie
- A modified zombieman but with 35 HP that fires two shots of plasma instead of a single hitscan bullet. There are two variants, one that drops regular clips and one that drops clips with only half the ammo.
- Machinegun guy
- A reskin of the chaingunner with 55 HP that fires in bursts much like the player's own assault rifle.
- Mecha demon/Mecha spectre
- Walks and bites faster than its vanilla counterpart and has 120 health.
- Grenadier
- Zombie variant with a grenade launcher and 140 HP. Grenades bounce till they lose momentum, then lay still for a few seconds before exploding. The player can safely run through still grenades. Killing the grenadier with an explosive attack will detonate the grenades strapped to it, causing a secondary explosion on the enemy for additional damage to surrounding monsters.
- Draugr
- A revenant with 240 HP that fires its projectile from its shoulder cannon rather than the center of its body, but is otherwise functionally identical to its vanilla counterpart.
- Fusionite
- Same stats as the arachnotron but fires its projectiles in strings of four with a small gap in between each burst and only has 400 HP.
- Behemoth
- Same stats as the mancubus but fires its projectiles out of its cannons, instead of the center of its body, making the projectiles a little tougher to dodge. It has 480 HP.
- Diabolist
- Fiery-red cousin of the arch-vile with 650 HP. Summons exploding plumes of fire beneath the player’s feet that linger for a few moments and then explode repeatably.
- Weak cyberdemon
- Has 25% less health than vanilla (3000 HP), and is susceptible to explosion/radius damage. Its rockets (which are distinct from player rockets) deal slightly less damage and have a smaller explosion radius than vanilla. Has green cybernetic parts to visually distinguish it from the standard cyberdemon.
- Blue skull cyberdemon
- A regular cyberdemon that has its health lowered to 3200 HP and drops a blue skull key when killed.
- Incarnate
- A blackened revenant with 300 HP that uses a beefed-up revenant punch as its only attack but moves more than twice as fast and punches three times faster than its vanilla counterpart.
- Flaming sentry
- An invisible, non-shootable arch-vile that doesn't count towards the kill percentage and acts as an environmental hazard rather than a regular monster.
