Brutalist Doom is a 2014 joke WAD by 1337 Doomer. Named after the brutalist architecture movement, it deprives Doom of its music and most of its color, with most of the game's textures replaced with featureless, gray concrete. It was uploaded to the /idgames archive on August 8, 2014, and received the Mockaward at that year's Cacowards.

Content[edit]

Brutalist Doom contains no new levels, weapons, or monsters. Instead, it radically changes the visual and audio presentation of the game:

  • almost all textures and flats are replaced with GRAY ones, even exit signs and key-colored stripes;
  • all music tracks replaced by one silent track;
  • custom COLORMAP and PLAYPAL are used, which make the game grey and dull, including monsters and items.

The mod is compatible with Doom II, The Plutonia Experiment and TNT: Evilution. In the latter it makes MAP30 very hard to beat, because the first puzzle requires the player to pay atteniton to the colored torches, which are now all grey.
