Byte 'n Switch demonstration

Byte 'n Switch is a glitch in Doom (2016) that allows equipping runes into normally locked slots.

Requirements and execution[edit]

This glitch can be performed with any rune. Mouse and keyboard controls can be considered a requirement of this glitch, as currently there is no known way of performing it using a controller.

To execute this glitch, one needs to follow these steps:

  1. Open the "Runes" tab of the dossier;
  2. Hover the mouse over an unlocked rune slot;
  3. Use the arrow keys to select a locked slot where the rune will be placed;
  4. Left click while keeping the mouse over an unlocked rune slot;
  5. Use the mouse to select the rune.

Tactical analysis[edit]

While the value on the mastery progress bar is gibberish and the numbers above it are not shown, runes can still be mastered while in locked slots. This may be useful for completing the game 100%, as it will allow gaining progress on and mastering runes which take a lot of time to master (such as Ammo Boost) early.

Trivia[edit]

This glitch was initially accidentally discovered by the speedrunner ByteMe while practicing on-site for AGDQ 2020; however, due to the accidental nature of the discovery, a method for reproducing the glitch remained unknown until a month later when he accidentally performed it again, this time while recording with input overlay on. The glitch was named after him.
