Category talk:Heretic and Hexen screenshots

From DoomWiki.org

Could we / should we split this into heretic screenshots, hexen screenshots? I'm loath to over-categorise, but I was just hoping to load up every heretic screenshot and I have to pick through the hexen ones... -- Shambler (talk) 10:03, 3 March 2016 (CST)

As to "should we": given the small total number of commercial titles and the large number of screenshots per map we seem to be accepting, IMO that is not over-categorizing and would be cleaner.    Ryan W (talk) 10:19, 3 March 2016 (CST)
It's weird that it wasn't split from the beginning. I mean, there are separate categories for Doom 64 screenshots and Freedoom screenshots. --Gez (talk) 11:02, 3 March 2016 (CST)
Also, the Doom series screenshots contain a weird and haphazard mix of screenshots from alphas, console ports, classic Doom games, Doom 3, and even other software such as Death Manager or the Doom II screensaver. --Gez (talk) 11:06, 3 March 2016 (CST)
Yeah, we discussed that on IRC recently; Doom 4 screenshots will just add to the mix.  Separating all that would be a far bigger job though.    Ryan W (talk) 11:39, 3 March 2016 (CST)
The biggest part of the issue is that these categories are mostly filled by the licensing drop-down in the upload form, and they've been made according to copyright owner. There are also cases where it's quite unclear what choice should be made; e.g. for this I settled on "Doom series" because it showed a Doom level with Doom textures, but it's an editor shot instead of a game shot. So, beyond the tedious aspect of recategorizing about 1300 screenshots, there's mostly the issue of deciding what to do about how we should reorganize MediaWiki:Licenses. --Gez (talk) 14:32, 3 March 2016 (CST)
On IRC my suggestion was to not add more templates but to make them take arguments so that we as a maintenance task could refine the categorization of images. We've already had complaints that there are too many licensing options so anything that would suggest adding more of them is a no in my book. We also cannot just remove a bunch either given how often a lot of them are used. It's difficult to do anything productive with. --Quasar (talk) 15:14, 3 March 2016 (CST)
