This article is about the monster in Doom: The Dark Ages. For other games, see:

The chaingunner soldier is a demonic soldier enemy which occurs in Doom: The Dark Ages, playing a role similar to the former human commandos of previous games, such as the heavy weapon dude, commando, and riot soldier.

Tactical analysis[edit]

Chaingunner soldiers are similar to shield soldiers, using a metal shield to protect themselves while they fire salvos of bullets. The shields carried by chaingunners are more ornate than those of other soldiers, making them easier to identify.

Chaingunner soldiers attack without warning and can inflict a lot of damage, so when facing them it is best to hold up the shield saw until the chaingun has fired, then fire a few shots of your own. It is possible to kill the soldier by superheating its shield with gunfire and then using a shield throw, but firing grenades and rockets behind the soldier is also effective.

Lore[edit]

Chaingunner soldiers carry cursed weapons which cause unending torment. Only battle allows them to find absolution, where they experience surging aggression and mindless ferocity when experiencing the roar of their arm-grafted weapon. The gun is described as "hyper-ballistic".
