ColdWire is a 13-level episode replacement designed for Doom II and limit-removing source ports, created primarily by Santtu Pesonen (MFG38). Featuring a custom palette and a texture set built around it, ColdWire focuses heavily on atmosphere with "classically inspired gameplay". Most of the levels in ColdWire were created by MFG38, with the exception of three levels provided by guest mappers Salmon and Death Bear. Additionally, the mapset features a full original soundtrack composed entirely by MFG38, as well as two custom monsters implemented with DeHackEd.

Because the internal DeHackEd patch utilizes DEHEXTRA, and because custom skies for the levels are defined using the MBF sky transfer, ColdWire requires a source port with support for both to work properly; Crispy Doom was primarily used to test the WAD and is thus the minimum target port.

Development of ColdWire started in late 2022, shortly after MFG38 had made the custom palette and featured it in his speedmap Sacre Bleu. Contained in Sacre Bleu, albeit partially unused, were also some of the textures that would end up being used in ColdWire. RC1 of ColdWire was released on January 12, 2025, with an RC2 release following on February 23 and the final version being released on the Doomworld forums on May 19 and on the /idgames archive on May 31.

Content[edit]

Custom monsters[edit]

Rocket zombie
A zombie that shoots rockets. Has 80 hit points. Replaces the dead lost soul decoration.
Winged imp
A flying version of the imp that moves 50% faster than its grounded counterpart and throws two consecutive fireballs when it attacks. Has 120 hit points. Replaces the MBF helper dog.

Vanilla bestiary changes[edit]

ColdWire makes the following modifications to the vanilla bestiary:

  • Lost souls' hit points have been halved (from 100 to 50).
  • The Icon of Sin's hit points have been increased to 800.
  • Cyberdemons now call A_KeenDie instead of A_BossDeath in their death state. A door in the final area of MAP12 makes use of this change, being tied to the cyberdemons' death triggers.
  • Commander Keen has had its COUNTKILL flag removed so that it spawns when playing with -nomonsters. MAP12 implements a mechanism that takes advantage of this change to make the map beatable when playing as such.

In addition to the changes listed above, the pistol has been modified to fire at a faster rate. This is the only weapon-related change in ColdWire's DeHackEd patch.

Built-in demos[edit]

This WAD features three built-in demos. All require Doom II v1.9 to view them. The demo levels are:

Demo Level Skill Tics Length

DEMO2 MAP02: Gutwrench Forestry 4 3157 1:30.20
