Dreamcatcher Apparatus is a twenty-level megawad for Doom II designed for limit removing source ports created by various members of the Doomer Boards community, led by Jon Vail (40oz). It was released on the Doomer Boards forums and the Doomworld forums on May 1, 2022 and is the forty-seventh entry in the ongoing Doomer Boards Projects. The mapset features a dark techbase / cosmic dimension theme and features a custom palette designed to give the maps a dreamy atmosphere. Notably, it also alters the colormap to give the invulnerability state a purple tint.

The WAD also features a custom status bar, title and intermission pics, and menu graphics courtesy of Pixel Fiend, an altered status bar face from Sergey Burow (SilverMiner), and recolored sprites by segfault and DannT. The project has been noted as having a slightly higher difficulty than most DBPs, particularly in the second half of the WAD. A finalized version of the WAD was uploaded to the /idgames archive on January 4, 2023.

Story[edit]

Violet-viridian light bathes the edifice of the structure before you. Its hue cleanses, starkly cuts through the fog of your mind. The first few moments are always confusing, but the unmistakable, particular weight of your pistol in your hand centers you.

You recall now. You're an oneironaut, a dream explorer. Or perhaps "explorer" is too romantic. You are, of course, a soldier. One specially trained and equipped by Union Aerospace's Thaumaturgy Division to infiltrate and secure a place beyond reality, beyond Hell.

What you can't remember is why you're here, or why the pit of your stomach sinks at the sight of the leather-brown monster ahead. Its mere presence makes you uneasy, betrays your training. You can smell it from here. You shouldn't be able to.

Your other guns are missing. No armor. The comms unit in your helmet can't uplink. Something's terribly wrong. In that sleep of death, what dreams may come must give us pause.

Built-in demos[edit]

This WAD features three built-in demos. All require Doom II v1.9 to view them. The demo levels are:

Demo Level Skill Tics Length
DEMO1 MAP02: Twinkling Spires 4 2164 1:01.83
DEMO2 MAP06: Notice Me Senpai 4 2408 1:08.80
DEMO3 MAP09: Intoxicating Dreams 4 1685 0:48.14

Trivia[edit]

  • All of the attract mode demos were created by BiZ.
  • The use of "Evening of the Undead" as the intermission music was suggested by Ilya Lazarev (joe-ilya).
  • Redead-ITA had created an altered COLORMAP lump for this project but it was ultimately rejected due to how much it changed the visual character of the maps. However, part of this COLORMAP lives on in indigo and neon green sections of the invulnerability colors.
