Doom64 EX Plus is a fork of Doom64 EX by Adam Bilbrough (Gibbon) that aimed to continue the development of Doom64 EX. It fixes various bugs and adds several additional features unique to the port. It has been updated as of 3.6.0 to support the DOOM64.WAD from the 2020 re-release, which also includes The Lost Levels. This allows the game to be played natively on Linux and macOS without using a recreation mod like Doom CE.

Because of the new enhancements, the maintainer was also porting over existing PWADs for the new implementation.

Features[edit]

  • Based on Doom64 EX 2.5
  • Support for the IWAD from Nightdive Studios' official remaster; the last release doesn't support IWAD generated from ROM data.
  • Support for the Lost Levels campaign
  • Support for loading PWADs
  • DeHackEd support in the form of DeHackEd64 (removed in 4.2)
  • Better performance (especially when compared to Nightdive Studios' official version)
  • Messages for discovering secret areas
  • Support of MAP slots up to MAP40
  • The "medkit you REALLY need!" message fix
  • Many bugfixes

Details[edit]

Doom64 EX Plus is brought to modern platforms by being ported to SDL3. It used to support all the features from the latest Doom64 EX build, version 2.5. Like its predecessor, Doom64 EX Plus relies on the game's native data to achieve a nearly 100% accurate recreation of Doom 64's game loop. As such, the IWAD from Nightdive Studios' official remaster is required.

DeHackEd64[edit]

Unique to Doom64 EX Plus was its former inclusion of a custom DeHackEd parser, suited for Doom 64. Based on the parser from Chocolate Doom, DeHackEd64 allows authors to change things, weapons, states and other attributes to their liking. DeHackEd64 patches are made with a custom editing library derived from DEH 9000, called DEH 64000.

Version history[edit]

The first public version of Doom64 EX Plus was released on September 20, 2022. The last version is 4.2.0.0, released on 2025-07-13.

Version 4.2 added FMOD support; to comply with its license, the project changed its license from GPL to DSL and removed DeHacked64, xinput support and dedicated server code. An abandonment notice was added to the repository on November 5, 2025 and the repository was marked as archived.
