Doom 2 In Rural Only is a 33-level megawad for Doom II, designed for MBF21-compatible source ports. It is the result of a community project led by Alex Decker (myolden) and taviow, which was first announced on the Doomworld forums on April 5, 2025, with the release following on July 27, 2025, and the final version being uploaded to the idgames archive on September 20, 2025.
The mapset is a sequel to Doom 2 In City Only, which was released the previous year, but focuses on rural settings instead of urban ones. It features a custom soundtrack with 13 bespoke compositions. The set also contains a bonus resource map, featuring doomcute vehicles created by CBM for use in other maps.
Doom 2 In Rural Only won a Cacoward in 2025.

Custom content[edit]
The WAD includes a custom color palette by myolden, along with several Boom colormaps, as well as UMAPINFO, MUSINFO, COMPLVL, SWITCHES, and ANIMATED lumps. A DeHackEd patch is also included, which is used to remove full brightness for a handful of states. The animated skies seen in the maps were created for the project by Muumi, while the title screen was made by dashiefrickintyan, the M_DOOM graphic by Daniel Alexander (Danlex), and the custom status bar by Ludi. The majority of the custom textures were taken from Lost Civilization and cc4-tex. Furthermore, the plasma gun's firing sound has been changed to its Doom 3 counterpart.
