Doom CE is a total conversion and overhaul mod created by molecicco. Its aim is to bring the levels, graphics, sounds and gameplay changes found in the Sony PlayStation and Nintendo 64 releases of Doom to the GZDoom source port, whilst also providing a series of enhancements, modifications and additional new content.
Doom CE was built upon the PlayStation Doom TC and Doom 64: Retribution projects, and makes heavy use of ZScript and custom menus to achieve a high degree of customization. Doom CE requires DOOM2.WAD for the Sony PlayStation content and DOOM64.WAD for the Doom 64 content.
Doom CE was given an honorable mention at the 2022 Cacowards.
Content[edit]
By default, Doom CE comes in two different versions. The first comes with all the levels that were available from the PlayStation versions of Doom and Final Doom, alongside their respective graphical and sound changes, such as the unique sound effects, modified textures, and soundtrack by Aubrey Hodges. Additionally, all levels that had to be scrapped for these versions of the game were faithfully recreated in the PlayStation style and included in the standard level progression, alongside the new levels made originally for the Atari Jaguar and Sony PlayStation versions of the game. Conversions of No Rest for the Living and SIGIL also appear as additional playable episodes.
The second version is based off Doom 64, and is a comprehensive attempt at bringing everything from that game into GZDoom. Besides including all of the graphics, sounds, music, and actors from the game, it also comes with both the original campaign and the Lost Levels expansion pack. Furthermore, Doom CE also includes all of the material previously built for the Absolution TC, with the levels included as part of an additional "Absolution Levels" episode, which also feature the custom items and monsters from the TC (which can, optionally, be enabled also in the main campaign levels). Certain custom monsters cut for Doom 64, such as the revenant and arch-vile, have been recreated and included, and can also optionally be made to appear in the campaign. Two other map packs made for the TC originally, Redemption Denied and The Reckoning, are likewise included as bonus episodes.
Doom CE comes with several add-ons that can be enabled when launching the mod that provide various enhancements, such as: parallax skies, upscaled textures and sprites, brightmaps support, custom decals, additional sound effects, and several more. A lot more customization can be enabled in the options menu, including choosing a preset, such as wanting the mod to behave as closely to the console version as possible, or providing a myriad of changes and enhancements utilizing GZDoom features.
